This book sets up a lot of stuff and only gives you bread crumbs before you finally get clued into everything on the last couple of chapters. The hook at the very end makes you want to consider the last installment

Historia
Once upon a time, in a parallel universe, there existed the continent of Triton.... The land was filled with beauty, but it was also splintered by war. Out of the chaos grew a conspiracy to reawaken the Beast, a fearsome creature who wrought only tragedy and devastation. The only way to stop him was to fulfill an ancient prophecy: Triton’s four strongest warriors must wed its four most powerful witches, binding all nations together and finally bringing peace to the land.

Decent mythological story
Revisado: 12-29-19
There was a number of great narrators. Kind of like Game of Thrones. It was a little hard keeping track of the characters. What really brought this story down for me was the persistent “virginal naiveté” that most of the main female characters exhibited that I found preposterous and distracting. It’s a troubling narrative that many authors persist in adding to and I was disappointed to experience it again.

Historia
Lucy Bowman would never have guessed that her best friend, Duffy McCready (of McCready’s Bait Shop & Funeral Home) has been in love with her since they were kids. Fear of rejection and his own romantic complications prevented Duffy from confessing his true feelings in high school, so he stood by and watched her wed Wayne Garten right after high school. Wayne had always been a cheapskate, so it comes as no surprise when he suffers a fatal accident while fixing his own truck.

This is the final book in the series, but I’m not ready to say good-bye. This is a wonderful store and companion to “A few Pecans Short.” It’s a great comedic book with some life lessons and love. Never gets boring.

Historia
Reporter Diana Marcum is in crisis. A long-buried personal sadness is enfolding her - and her career is stalled - when she stumbles upon an unusual group of immigrants living in rural California. She follows them on their annual return to the remote Azores islands in the Atlantic Ocean, where bulls run down village streets, volcanoes are active, and the people celebrate festas to ease their saudade, a longing so deep that the Portuguese word for it can’t be fully translated.

A story on finding your people
Revisado: 02-11-19
I loved this book, not just because it was a story of a beautiful community among diaspora, but because it also reminded me of my own similar experience on another island - Bermuda. The similarities between finding a loving and accepting community on another island touched me and I really enjoyed the story. There were times I didn't know where she was going, but just went along for the ride because it was descriptively written and I became distracted from my questions. I loved her experience so much, I'm considering visiting the Azores on my European trip next year.
The ending was a teeny abrupt but I feel like that was on purpose to leave a possible path for another book. This read more like a novel and less like someone recounting their story.

Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong, not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza's story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become.

A lot packed into one little collection of essays
Revisado: 02-11-19
I had only read excerpts of this book before my book club chose to read this and I'm so glad. There is a lot packed in about sexism, ageism, stereotypes and abuse in this tiny book. But the thing I love most, is it was a book written about these struggles in regards to my people - Latinos. I'm very grateful that an author so talented shone through to many different readers of various ethnicities. This is just a gem of a book at an insightful look as to the struggles humans have and the beauty still found within. It's no wonder this book is so cherished years later.

Another view on the same story
Revisado: 02-11-19
This book reminded me of "If Beale Street Could Talk," but the differences were, it came from multiple character views and went past when one of the characters got out of prison. This is not an uplifting story - as most aren't in this genre - but it helps keep a spotlight on some of the racial atrocities that continue to occur in the judicial system. It has somewhat of a romance story subplot, but the character of Celestial really chaffed my hide and those parts irritated me.
This book is excellent if you don't know "If Beale Street Could Talk," but because I do, this was just "okay" to me because it wasn't different enough to feel unique. Still a good book club read.

Historia
Summer Butler had no idea that Darling Investigations would be such a smash. But ratings don’t lie—fans love watching the former star solve real-life crimes in her hometown. With the first season wrapped, the reality-show PI is feeling the pressure to make the next one an even bigger success. It seems the town is harboring an arsonist, and all the smoldering signs point to the same culprit: her cousin Dixie.

Misses the mark
Revisado: 02-11-19
While I really enjoyed the first book in the series, this second booked leaned heavily on character personalities and traits and it tainted the punch of chic-lit enjoyment. Summer becomes an annoyingly blind in her self-righteousness, the men in her life bring new meaning to toxic masculinity (while oddly knowing they are) and throw in a predictable plot with some holes and... I've basically revealed the whole plot just in general vague descriptions.
I wanted to love this book, it had some good comedic moments. The end sets up for a third, but I don't know if I'll invest more time in this series. It's just an okay listen.
