Historia
Our narrator produces a sound from the piano no one else at the Conservatory can. She employs a technique she learned from her parents—also talented musicians—who fled China in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. But when an accident leaves her parents debilitated, she abandons her future for a job at a high-end beauty and wellness store in New York City.

Uniquely creepy
Revisado: 10-28-24
If you just go by tags like body horror, or evil corporation poisoning ppl, or toxic beauty industry, I’d have said this book wasn’t for me. But I think this one somehow transcends those labels to be something novel and really freaking scary.

Historia
St. Vincent's Orphanage for Boys. Turn of the century, in a remote valley in Pennsylvania. Here, under the watchful eyes of several priests, thirty boys work, learn, and worship. Peter Barlow, orphaned as a child by a gruesome murder, has made a new life here. As he approaches adulthood, he has friends, a future...a family. Then, late one stormy night, a group of men arrive at their door, one of whom is badly wounded, occult symbols carved into his flesh. His death releases an ancient evil that spreads like sickness, infecting St. Vincent's and the children within.

Scary and well written
Revisado: 09-01-24
Really excellently developed plot. Balances depth and a great pace. Was hard to put down. Ignore the description’s comment about Lord of the Flies. Kids gone bad hardly warrants the comparison.

Historia
On his 59th birthday, Tyson Parks—a famous, but struggling, horror writer—receives an ornate antiquarian desk in the hopes it will rekindle his creative juices. Perhaps inspire him to write another best-selling book and prove his best years aren’t behind him… As Tyson begins to use the new desk, he finds himself writing copy at an unfathomable speed, becomes so focused on writing that he binges on all-night, all-day sessions that take a serious physical and psychological toll. Soon, Tyson begins acting strange. Violent.

Original story
Revisado: 08-31-24
I honestly didn’t expect much from a book about a writer and his evil desk. I was wrong. The story is engaging, keeps you reading, the characters develop well, and when the horror hits, it hits pretty hard I thought.

The OG sci-fi story about dreams. You’ll easily notice this was the inspiration of a few popular movies in this century. You’ll also notice that Lathe of Heaven is the best of the stories

Historia
It was no secret that journalist Jack Sparks had been researching the occult for his new book. No stranger to controversy, he'd already triggered a furious Twitter storm by mocking an exorcism he witnessed. Then there was that video: 40 seconds of chilling footage that Jack repeatedly claimed was not of his making, yet it was posted from his own YouTube account. Nobody knew what happened to Jack in the days that followed - until now.

Creative
Revisado: 06-02-24
I wanted a scary book. I was reluctant on this one bc some reviewers mentioned the funny parts. Sure, they’re not wrong but it’s still >95% horror, fast paced, couldn’t put it down, and highly creative. Loved the elements of social media woven in the story.

Historia
Brad Woods has performed a lot of autopsies, but never one like this. The body is purged of all blood. Fear has made Sue Wing run from the darkened school and into night, a fear so powerful she can only name it using the Cantonese myths of her grandmother: Cup-hu-girngsi, the corspe who drinks blood. Reporters like Rich Carter don't believe in the supernatural, but all the signs are pointing to the same conclusion: a vampire is stalking the streets of Rio Verde. No, Rich Carter doesn't believe in such things. Not yet.

Wasn’t actually feeling a vampire book but I knew Little never writes an ordinary trope. I really liked this one. Great pacing is probably the most enjoyable quality of little’s stories.

Historia
After the tragic death of their eleven-year-old son, Adam and Ella are fighting to keep their family from falling apart. Then comes an opportunity that seems too good to be true. They win a competition to live for free in a breathtakingly beautiful mansion on the Cornish Lizard Peninsula. There’s just one catch: the house is supposedly haunted. Despite misgivings, the chance to start afresh is too tempting to pass up. Adam, Ella, and their surviving son, Henry, move into Fenton House. But as the house starts to reveal its secrets, they come to suspect that they may not be alone.

Great story crafting, great pace and delivery, just a really solid and enjoyable read. The vocal artist Ralph Lister did great. I don’t listen to many artists at 1x speed but Lister is spot on for my tastes

It looked like another ordinary day in Los Angeles. Then night came...Evil as old as the centuries has descended upon the City of Angels - it comes as a kiss from the terrifying but seductive immortals. Slowly at first, then by the legions, the ravenous undead choke Los Angeles with bloodthirsty determination - and the hordes of monstrous victims steadily mount each night.

Worst ending
Revisado: 02-16-24
Great writing. Obviously a gifted writer. Exciting story. But every character and plot line is wholly irrelevant to the random event that concludes the story. Might as well have written “the end” about an hour and half sooner and it would have been much less aggravating.

Historia
Horror is what Dan Law enjoys. He loves to read horror novels as a way to escape from his teaching job, from his loneliness, from the everyday dullness of life in Silver Lake. That’s what Dan lives for. When a new bookstore opens in town, every visitor receives a free book of their own. A book that tells their own personal story...a story they have to follow to the brutal end. As Silver Lake’s population descends into violent savagery, Dan finds he is no longer living for horror novels - he’s living inside one.

Again Haynes takes a concept one might think corny and weaves it nicely into a really enjoyable story. If you like Ray Bradbury, particularly Something Wicked This Way Comes, you’ll really like this book.

Historia
Crease is known in Weaver as ‘the bug guy', the man who takes care of insects and other critters. But what emerges from the shadows of the town's waste plant is beyond anything found in nature. Fist-sized cockroaches. Bird-sized wasps. Spiders, millipedes, ticks, all swollen to enormous bulk with vicious appetites to match. And other things, creatures that should never exist.

Great story
Revisado: 01-22-24
A great mix of thrill, grossout, and humor. The humor is dry and almost subtle, not to distract from the horror in any way. The horror is creepy and gross. And the story is just fun.
