Historia
Elantris was built on magic, and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade, and Elantris began to rot. Now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium. Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots? Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start.

Good value, slow narrator and average fantasy.

Tough going!
Revisado: 07-16-24
This was seriously hard work. I am listing to the entire Cosmere series at present and had to get through Elantris. I really did not enjoy the experience, both in terms of the story and the performance. Now I get to go back to the stormlight series. Thank goodness for that!

Historia
The stunning second novel in Tad Williams' classic fantasy series, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, set in the fantasy world of Osten Ard. Following a brutal civil war, Osten Ard has been crushed under the rule of the two villainous High Kings. A single hope remains: if the rebels can find the three swords of legend - Memory, Sorrow and Thorn - they might be able to bring the Storm King and evil King Elias down. Once but a humble kitchen boy, Simon is now Simon Snowlock, dragonslayer and bearer of the mythical sword Thorn.

A dissatisfying conclusion!
Revisado: 07-12-21
After the first book, I found this series hard work, but persisted in order to see it resolved. There were many ways that a satisfactory conclusion could have been reached even without being overly cliche or cheesy. Robin Hobb chose none of them and instead left me feeling like the story was somewhat incomplete and unresolved. Disappointing...

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Self indulgent and painful!
Revisado: 03-08-20
Jumping from third person to second person, and all in present tense, this book appears to have won accolades in the same way a modernist painting is considered "ground breaking art" by only the most "sophisticated". I guess I'm not that sophisticated... so I'll say it: the emperor has no clothes - this is a horrible book. You have been warned.

I got this book for my children and ended up listening along with them. The classic story line of a disadvantaged character who discovers their secret identity but is attacked by a jealous rival before ultimate victory never gets old. Recommended!
