Waste of time
Revisado: 02-21-25
Thankfully this was short
and free. I have climbed Denali and thought it would be at least interesting. Nope. It was fragmented and ridiculous. The story - such as it was - did not translate well to the format and it was hard to follow. Don’t bother.

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

A Charming Magical Tale
Revisado: 01-13-25
I just finished listening to this book for the 3rd or 4th time. The narrator does a fantastic job of conveying a variety of different voices with just the right tone and emphasis. The story unfolds slowly but it’s an excellent way to get to know the characters. There is a lot of day to day detail as the main character learns how to be a butler but also learns about magic in the world and how to care for his aging employer. The magic is subtle and exists in a way that makes it highly believable that there is magic lurking in corners where we can’t see it. What I liked best about this story and why I’ve found myself listening to it more than once is the main characters are people I’d like to know in real life and the setting truly is magical. It’s a hidden gem of a story.

Sorry I wasted my time…
Revisado: 12-30-24
The description of this book made me think I would like it - but I ended up being disappointed that I spent my time listening to it. I’m glad I didn’t waste a credit since I bought it on sale but I did feel like I wasted my time. The plot dragged on and on and I wondered how a story with multiple murders could actually be boring at times. The supernatural element seemed poorly developed and the ending was very unsatisfying. I will avoid this author in the future.

Historia
When Anna Hartley’s husband, Henry, calls her with a terrible, guilty confession, she can’t believe what she hears. It has to be a bad joke—the mild, predictable artist she married would never hurt a fly, let alone commit murder. But her confusion turns to horror when police find his body washed up on the banks of the Rio Grande.

Glad I didn’t pay full price
Revisado: 12-26-24
I bought this on a Daily Deal -otherwise I would have returned it. The story goes back and forth between 2 main characters - Cass and Anna - Cass just didn’t ring true to me. She was a smart woman who did a lot of really stupid things. Her character was unbelievable and that really spoiled the story for me. The plot sounded interesting but Cass ruined it -

Strong Heroine makes a great story
Revisado: 12-03-24
I’m a big fan of the Alex Delaware mysteries so I was interested in a mystery by the same author - hoping it would be as good. Mr. Kellerman did not disappoint with this standalone story with a unique heroine. The main character has her flaws and her life is unusual but she triumphs over some truly bad characters. Not a typical resolution but very satisfying.

Engaging Mystery - Kept me listening
Revisado: 12-03-24
The premise of the story was intriguing- a podcast looking back at a disappearance and a death that had been written off as murder-suicide. But the children of the victims were not satisfied with that conclusion and painful memories resurface as the podcast digs up the past. The characters were strong and the story kept me guessing. I particularly liked the police detective who finally manages to solve both mysteries. The ending was a good one.

Choppy and Disjointed Storytelling
Revisado: 11-05-24
I almost didn’t finish this book and had to restart listening to it several times. The author used multiple points of view and jumped back and forth between different time lines in a way that I found very distracting and hard to get into. I ultimately finished more out of curiosity than any real interest. Rich people can live miserable lives and bad things happen. No great insight there. It’s not the worst book I’ve listened to but it wasn’t very satisfying. I can’t recommend it.

Historia
Hundreds of years ago, the last humans on Earth boarded the Exodus Fleet in search of a new home among the stars. After centuries spent wandering empty space, their descendants were eventually accepted by the well-established species that govern the Milky Way. But that was long ago. Today, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, the birthplace of many, yet a place few outsiders have ever visited. As many Exodans leave for alien cities or terrestrial colonies, those who remain are left to ponder their own lives and futures.

Too Boring to Finish
Revisado: 02-12-24
I absolutely love the first book in this series - A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. I’ve listened to it several times and will definitely listen again. But the rest of the series doesn’t measure up and this one in particular is a snooze fest. There are too many random characters introduced early on and nothing drives the plot forward. After wondering repeatedly who the book was about I realized I didn’t care. Not only were there too many disconnected characters early on but none of them were interesting enough to make me want to continue and see if the story brought them together eventually. This book would make even less sense without reading/listening to Small Angry Planet - but it’s so boring by comparison I couldn’t keep listening. I’d rather listen to Small Angry Planet again or find something new that keeps my interest. I’ve wasted enough time on this book and don’t recommend it.

The Postmaster looked over my shoulder. As I turned to look I saw a flicker of movement from across the street. I felt unseen eyes peer at me. He walked away without another word. I watched as he climbed onto his bicycle and sped away down the street. I turned back and looked over my shoulder. Someone had been watching us.

Can’t finish this one
Revisado: 01-08-24
Normally I like to finish the books i start but this one was not for me. I figure if the book hasn’t really grabbed me by halfway through then I don’t need to waste my time on the second half. The premise was interesting but main character seemed almost hysterical- everything was pitched with high drama. I don’t enjoy the writing style - too old fashioned- and it doesn’t appeal to me. When I realized I didn’t care about what happened next it was time to quit.

Anisa Ellahi dreams of being a translator of “great works of literature,” but instead mostly spends her days subtitling Bollywood movies, living off her parents’ generous allowance, and discussing the “underside of life” with her best friend, Naima. Anisa’s mediocre white boyfriend, Adam, only adds to her growing sense of inadequacy with his savant-level aptitude for languages, successfully leveraging his expansive knowledge into an enviable career. But when Adam learns to speak Urdu with native fluency practically overnight, Anisa forces him to reveal his secret.

Left a Bad Aftertaste
Revisado: 11-08-23
If it’s possible for a book to leave a “bad taste” like eating a piece of fruit that is rotten inside then this would be that book. I bought it on a Daily Deal based on several glowing reviews but I wish I had paid more attention to the negative reviews because I found those to be spot on. I can’t really describe why I disliked the book so much without leaving spoilers so I will say instead that nothing in the book’s description really gives a hint of the downward spiral the story takes. Great premise with a resolution that manages to be both disappointing and gross. As another reviewer noted the ending is so abrupt that I had to replay it to make sure that was really the end of the book. The main character ultimately proved to be unlikeable to the point that I quit caring about what happened to her so I was relieved to realize the book was finally over. Even though the narrator’s voice was lovely I consider the time listening to this book to be a waste. What could have been a great story was far from that which makes it even more disappointing.
