Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Neither Beryl nor Edwina are the least bit interested in attending events at their alma mater, Miss Dupont’s Finishing School for Young Ladies. Their lives are very full indeed in the village of Walmsley Parva. However, when a letter arrives from Miss Dupont herself requesting their help in a professional capacity, they reluctantly pack their bags for London. Upon arrival, they learn from Miss Dupont that her business has seen a steep decline since the days before World War I and that now she is concerned a saboteur is attempting to damage the school’s reputation.

I love this series - set just after WW1- in the English countryside. The characters are well drawn, subtle humor and interesting plots - perfect for fans of cozy mysteries. And Barbara Rosenblat is my favorite narrator!

Historia
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

Deeply moving and interesting
Revisado: 09-15-23
As a child of World War 2 veterans - I was amazed at what was happening at home during the war- I wish my parents were still living - it would have been so interesting to here their thoughts - even without their thoughts it explains a lot about them and the subsequent times in the US- well worth your time to listen to this.

Fascinating story!
Revisado: 02-13-23
I really enjoyed this look into a part of history I wasn't very familiar with. The negative for me, was in the voice of the narrator. It was stilted and annoying. I'm guessing that it was to match the main character in the story - who had to act and weigh her words carefully, but it wasn't a very pleasing voice. The merit of the story shows in my perseverance in listening to the end when I didn't enjoy the narrator.

Historia
Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Witty Dialogue!
Revisado: 02-13-23
This book made me laugh out loud. The repartee between the characters was witty and sharp. The story kept you guessing until the end - though the happy ending was there as well. The only negative is the frequent use of the F word. I know it's a common word these days but it's still not one I enjoy hearing.

An Interesting and enjoyable read for WWII genre
Revisado: 12-31-20
I didn't like the story at the beginning and that was largely in part because of the narrator's English accent. Very hard to follow. When the story switched to France during WWII - the narration was much better. But - I really enjoyed the storyline and the picture of France in wartime occupation. There's always a different angle to understanding what happened and how it was for the European population-especially for France. I generally have a fairly negative view of France, probably because they seem to dislike Americans - but it gave me compassion and maybe some understanding of why they are they way they are. I can't imagine what it would be like to have my home and city bombed and occupied by such evil. So, I recommend it with reservation only because of the narration.

Historia
At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly.

One of the Best of this genre I've read!
Revisado: 12-31-20
Dragonfly is set in WWII - 5 young Americans are dropped into Paris, France - to infiltrate various businesses - with the task of gathering as much intel as they can for the OSS. The characters are well formed and interesting - the narrative compelling - and the narration well done! I can't recommend it enough.

An interesting story set in North Dakota- which is fun if you are from the upper Midwest as I am
Revisado: 11-14-19
My only complaint is with the narrator- her male characters all sounded the same and it was also grating on my ears- mostly because most of the male characters were angry for the vast portion of the book! It wasn’t a pleasant listen for me.
The story line was fine- especially with the farm crisis in the background- which 20 years later still rings true

Wonderful story from one of my favorite authors!
Revisado: 04-26-18
I was hooked from the very beginning of this story and thoroughly enjoyed the audio version. Warm, sometimes funny, poignant and tense at times- an intriguing and sad look at domestic abuse at a time when there were few options for women. The story weaves between present day and the mid 1950s.
