Engaging listen
Revisado: 03-26-20
It takes awhile to get into this book, but the narrators are well cast for each POV and are easy to listen to. Andrew Perkins is particularly charming as Will. The characters are interesting and the story line is compelling. You want to keep listening to find out what happens, both between the characters and to see if the main character gets to her other son.
Some of the chapter beginnings are a bit difficult to "catch up" with and the writer assumes you'll get it. And you do, but sometimes I've wondered if I accidentally fast forwarded.

Historia
It's 1969 and Palm Springs socialite Maxine Simmons is planning a Thanksgiving feast to rival Nixon's stealthy maneuvers in the White House and Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. With a catered menu to die for and a dining room that looks like it's been ripped from the glossy pages of a magazine, her entrance to high society is all but assured. Then comes the humiliation of being dumped by her husband of 17 years. Banished to Arizona, the disgraced Maxine languishes in exile. But then she suddenly gets an idea of how she can win it all back.

Revisado: 07-12-19
Sarah's narration of Maxine was heart warming and funny. Her timing was fabulous. If profanity offends you, skip it, but it makes for Maxine's character.

Historia
The Doomsday Machine is Ellsberg's hair-raising insider's account of the most dangerous arms buildup in the history of civilization, whose legacy - and renewal under the Obama administration - threatens the very survival of humanity. It is scarcely possible to estimate the true dangers of our present nuclear policies without penetrating the secret realities of the nuclear strategy of the late Eisenhower and early Kennedy years, when Ellsberg had high-level access to them.

Humor and Struggle
Revisado: 07-25-18
I thought this book would be the story of a girl who becomes a star. It was SO much more. Alison's humor, wit and grit take this memoir to a totally different level. Her interactions and insights with the cast of LHOTP are hysterical, and the final chapters made me want to cheer wildly for her.
Alison's story is surprisingly tender and transparent as she reveals abuse by her brother. Heartbreaking to listen to, but her grit and humor shine through as she struggles and not only finds help for herself, but for others in changing California law. Brilliant.
I highly recommend listening to this book!

The scene where they go to the zoo.
Have you listened to any of Joan Walker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
