Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Astonishingly good book
Revisado: 05-15-24
i'd heard about this novel for years but resolutely refused to read it, convinced, for some reason, that it was about a dauntless matriarch in Indiana or thereabouts.
Not a bit of it. The Congo in the days of Lumumba is the setting for most of it. Four little women are taken there by their madly evangelical preacher father and long-suffering mother. Their tribulations are epic, the physical world that surrounds them is sensuously vivid. Each sister takes a different path, as does the mother, but the pattern comes together.
A most absorbing read.

Historia
September 1943: German forces occupy Rome. SS officer Paul Hauptmann rules with terror. The war's outcome is far from certain. An Irish priest, Hugh O'Flaherty, dedicates himself to helping those escaping from the Nazis. His home is Vatican City, the world's smallest state, a neutral, independent country within Rome where the occupiers hold no sway. Here Hugh brings together an unlikely band of friends to hide the vulnerable under the noses of the enemy. But Hauptmann's net begins closing in on the Escape Line and the need for a terrifyingly audacious mission grows critical.

Surprisingly engrossing book
Revisado: 05-15-24
Accounts of Resistance heroism in occupied countries during WWII are fairly thick on the ground. This one distinguishes itself by a clever structure, well-defined and sympathetic characters, a genuine build-up of tension and a most vivid evocation of Rome. Highly recommended.

Ukraine is currently embroiled in a tense fight with Russia to preserve its territorial integrity and political independence. But today's conflict is only the latest in a long history of battles over Ukraine's territory and its existence as a sovereign nation. As the award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy argues in The Gates of Europe, we must examine Ukraine's past in order to understand its present and future.

An extraordinarily good book
Revisado: 03-01-23
This history of Ukraine from its earliest moments draws a portrait through the ages of a most complex region. I have always been especially interested in Eastern Europe and the Mongols but could not put this down after that. For the first time understanding of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth dawned. I began to take my knowledge of Cossacks beyond "And Quiet Flows the Don".
The various partitions creating yet more ethnic minorities throughout Eastern and Central Europe left Ukraine riven religiously and politically, crushed between empires on all sides. Yet somehow its people kept rising from their knees, producing more food, industrial products and manpower than most of its neighbours. Black moments, too, especially periodic pogroms of its many Jews. But what a tale of endurance and re-emergence.
Essential reading.

We think we know the story of Africa’s Great Lakes region. Following the Rwandan genocide, an idealistic group of young rebels overthrew the brutal regime in Kigali, ushering in an era of peace and stability that made Rwanda the donor darling of the West, winning comparisons with Switzerland and Singapore. But the truth was considerably more sinister.

Historia
The 14th century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering time of crusades and castles, cathedrals and chivalry, and the exquisitely decorated Books of Hours; and on the other, a time of ferocity and spiritual agony, a world of chaos and the plague.

Terrific panorama of chivalry and its underside
Revisado: 12-03-21
I read this book decades ago and liked it then. Tuchman gallops effortlessly around late-medieval Europe, keeping Enguerrand de Coucy, the 7th of that name, as her central point of reference. The Audible take does not disappoint.
The 14th century was a particularly confusing one, with the two waves of the Hundred Years War, the beginning of the Wars of the Roses, vanishing central authority in France, the machinations of Burgundy, the Papal Schism, the rise of Protestantism, all interspersed with terrible visitations of the Black Death. Tuchman's message, I think, is that chivalry died of its own rigidty, coupled with a failure to practice what was preached in its name. (Sounds a bit like the Catholic Church, in parallel agony at the time.)
The Audible version is wonderfully read and most engaging. One irritating detail, and unfortunately it recurs frequently, is that "joust" is pronounced "joost" rather than "jowst". it is possible that this is a tribute to the French pronunciation, which if so would have prevailed at the time. It is distracting, however, and a few other pronunciations struck me, no expert, as dubious, not least of "Mainz".
All in all, a terrific book. I miss it already.

Historia
Between 1929 and 1945, two great travails were visited upon the American people: the Great Depression and World War II. This Pulitzer Prize–winning history tells the story of how Americans endured, and eventually prevailed, in the face of those unprecedented calamities. The Depression was both a disaster and an opportunity. As David Kennedy vividly demonstrates, the economic crisis of the 1930s was far more than a simple reaction to the alleged excesses of the 1920s.

This is an excellent overview of the three decades to the end of WWII, including a deft race through the war itself. Lively and detailed, never cumbersome. Good narration, though with a few surely preventable mispronunciations of foreign words. Recommended.

Historia
A gripping history of banking and the booms and busts that shaped the world on both sides of the Atlantic, The House of Morgan traces the trajectory of the J. P.Morgan empire from its obscure beginnings in Victorian London to the crash of 1987. Ron Chernow paints a fascinating portrait of the private saga of the Morgans and the rarefied world of the American and British elite in which they moved. Based on extensive interviews and access to the family and business archives, The House of Morgan is an investigative masterpiece.

Historia
Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

This is a vivid and well-rounded account of a pivotal period in recent (ish) American history. I worried at times that the muckrakers were running away with the story but Doris Kearns Goodwin hauled them back into proper alignment. I suppose Taft was the real revelation. A very good read/listen.
