Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Outstanding

This story tells of the brave women who served their country as war nurses and the constant struggles that they dealt with while trying to do their job. These brave women not only fought in a war but also against many other inequalities.

Historia
Mary Gauthier was 12 years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

The struggles that this family endured is heart wrenching. These parents should have never had children. What a horrific way for children to be raised.

A disappointing ending
Revisado: 05-09-23
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, it did seem to drone on a bit. The ending was quite disappointing considering the mystery of the entire story.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

I have learned so much about HELA cells and the person & family behind this incredible story. I don’t have the words to explain what a terrific story this is. A must read for all.
I am in awe of the writer, she has written this story with eloquence and honor.
Thank you Rebecca Skloot !

Wonderful Story
Revisado: 12-03-21
This started out a little slow for me but once the main character returned to her ‘roots’ I couldn’t stop listening. I love how Ms. Wingate can tell such a wonderful story and the listener/reader has no idea how she is going to tie it all together and the she does, So eloquently.
A wonderful book, thanks so much.

Revisado: 03-22-16
There is so much detail in this series that you feel like you are right there with the characters. I love to listen to these books, Ms. Porter reads so well, she has the voice accents perfect, she reads, as I am sure Ms. Gabaldon wanted the characters portrayed. I am entranced when I listen to these stories. It is so nice to listen to these stories on my way home from a stressful job. I am transported to a far away place for an hour a day. The historical work is amazing. Thanks to both of these ladies, the first for the story and the second for bringing it alive!
