Historia
When we think about the future of war, the military and Washington and most everyone gets it backwards. We think in terms of buying single military systems, such as fighter jets or aircraft carriers. And when we think about modernizing those systems, we think about buying better versions of the same things. But what really matters is not the single system but "the battle network"—the collection of sensors and shooters that enables a military to find an enemy system, target it, and attack it.

Adapt or die, the stunning choices
Revisado: 05-23-20
This is an incredibly well thought out and presented piece of research and understanding from someone who has the chops to present it. If you want to know what direction our military should go, you have to read this. I passed this book recommendation on to my son, a West Point Grad who is moving into the acquisitions branch of the Army. I told him this book was required reading for his new position.

Historia
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Garbage
Revisado: 08-21-19
Worst Baldacci ever. Formula writing, predictable, dripping with cliche, late in the book introduction of unknown evidence that wraps it all up. Don't waste your time, especially if you like Baldacci.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Not quite Circe, but this author is very talented.
Revisado: 11-15-18
Had to listen because of my tremendous enjoyment of Circe. Without spoiling anything, there were times that I believed focus on tangential aspects of the characters, distracted from the story. That turned out to be incorrect as those aspects were what bound it through the story and bundled it for the end. Miller is an incredibly talented author, in spite of the fact that this genre is miles from my wheelhouse. There's not a moment of doubt that I'll devour her next offering as well.

Revisado: 11-15-18
This is way out of my traditional genre's, but I was compelled by the reviews. This is a terrific listen. Thoroughly engaging, extremely well written, and very well read. Regardless of your typical listening habits, if you enjoy a great story, well told, you'll be glad you dove in.

Historia
In a 2017 survey, presidential historians ranked Dwight D. Eisenhower fifth on the list of great presidents, behind the perennial top four: Lincoln, Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Teddy Roosevelt. Historian William Hitchcock shows that this high ranking is justified. Eisenhower's accomplishments were enormous and loom ever larger from the vantage point of our own tumultuous times.

what many works consider a dull time in our history turns out to be complex and riveting. This was a great historical book that was even handed and fair, using the context of effects of time to measure importance. The narrator did an outstanding job

Formula
Revisado: 06-01-18
Too many times did I find myself asking "really?", at the overwhelmingly obvious that was supposed to be part of what a good novel would have as subtle conspiracy. I had hoped for better based on the reviews, it didn't pan out. It's a formula novel hoping to interject enough current events to make it intriguing. Not intriguing. Not really very good either.

Historia
Howard G. Buffett has seen first-hand the devastating impact of cheap Mexican heroin and other opiate cocktails across America. Mexican cartels have grown astonishingly powerful by exploiting both the gaps in our border security strategy and the desperation of migrants - all while profiting enormously off America's growing addiction to drugs. The solution isn't a wall. In this groundbreaking book, Buffett outlines a realistic, effective, and bi-partisan approach to fighting cartels, strengthening our national security, and tackling the roots of the chaos below the border.

False Pretense
Revisado: 06-01-18
If you want to learn that drugs are bad, gangs are bad and that we need to build a bubble over the US, then this is the book for you. I'm not going to spend much time on this review because I spent enough wasted time looking for an articulate opinion focused on describing a GENUINE problem and then on steps necessary to rectify the problem. I didn't find a hint of it here. Just more hyperbole and inflammatory rhetoric.
On top of that, the reader uses this constant imploring voice that gives the listener no depth for understanding the more important points of what the author may want to say.
This really is just garbage designed in the image of todays "instill fear" based politics.

Peter Ash came home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with only one souvenir: what he calls his "white static", the buzzing claustrophobia due to post-traumatic stress that has driven him to spend a year roaming in nature, sleeping under the stars. But when a friend from the marines commits suicide, Ash returns to civilization to help the man's widow with some home repairs. Under her dilapidated porch, he finds more than he bargained for.

Maybe the worst reader EVER!
Revisado: 03-28-18
The story is pretty good, the writing pretty solid, the reading is HORRIBLE. It completely killed the book. The reader has no acting ability and no ability to sound like different characters. The men sound like the children who sound like the females. It's like a chemistry teacher trying to read drama. I really wished I'd stopped, I can't get those hours back.

Wasn't really the book I had hoped for. I believed it would be more about the actual school with real life applications of the training. instead, it was a collection of memoirs with bits of anecdotal education.
