Historia
In June of 1860 three-year-old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outdoor privy with his throat slit. The crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection. At the time, the detective was a relatively new invention; there were only eight detectives in all of England and rarely were they called out of London, but this crime was so shocking that Scotland Yard sent its best man to investigate, Inspector Jonathan Whicher.

Beautiful, Haunting, and Personal
Revisado: 06-23-19
this was beautifully written and performed. I was lost in the back and forth a bit, but it read as a murder mystery and kept me engaged.
The last paragraphs hit me the hardest. Perfect ending.

Historia
The Little Stranger follows the strange adventures of Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. One dusty postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline - its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at 20 to nine.

Not a horror novel, but a decent read.
Revisado: 08-29-18
I originally chose this book after seeing the advertisement for the movie coming out later this year. After watching the trailer, I immediately went in search of the book. I expected more than I received. I went in expecting a horror novel, but the bits of supernatural occurrences sprinkled throughout were underwhelming and almost took away from the main story.
If I had gone into the story without the expectation of the supernatural, the story is a good one. The characters are well developed and you create a great connection with them. The story ended a bid abruptly and I'm a little out of sorts after listening because there are some loose ends for me.
The narrator was pretty good, no clipping and the further he got into the book the better the voices got. However, I did notice some clipped wording from editing. I'm glad I did the "buy 3 credits" deal and ended up paying only $11 something for the book rather than the $27 (or $29, I can't remember). I feel it is definitely overpriced, both for the story and the length.

Historia
Ever since Edgar Allan Poe looted a family's ignoble secret history for his classic story "The Fall of the House of Usher", living in the shadow of that sick dynasty has been an inescapable scourge for generations of Usher descendants. But not for horror novelist Rix Usher. Years ago he fled the isolated family estate of Usherland in the menacing North Carolina hills to pursue his writing career. He promised never to return. But his father's impending death has brought Rix back home to assume the role of Usher patriarch - and face his worst fears.

Great story!
Revisado: 08-11-18
I couldn't stop listening to this book. I was a little concerned that some of the previous reviews had said the story was hard to follow with the changes in time periods and people, but I found that they flowed really well - if you're paying attention at the particular time it changes.
I loved the narrator's cadence. Some of the audio was a little clipped, but his voices were good and I especially liked his old man mountain voice!

Disappointing...
Revisado: 09-28-16
I bought this book after seeing the commercials for the upcoming movie and was interested in the story. I've decided I won't be seeing the movie unless they've made some major changes. Unfortunately, the secret at the end I had figured out before I even started the book. I was hoping for something different. I didn't actually care for Louis either. He came off too whiney and young. There was really no emotional tie to him. I had to continuously force myself to listen to the rest of it and was relieved when it was over. Overall, I think I'll be returning this one.
