The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

The Best on the Civil War
Revisado: 10-30-21
I’ve read a number of books on the Civil War, with primarily Bruce Catton being the one most would compare with Foote. Catton is superb, but there is something in Foote’s writing that draws in. Amazing that I’ve not read / listened sooner, for I’ve missed out until this point. Listen to it for five minutes, you’ll be hooked until the last line of volume 3.

Historia
All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants - both two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine as we laugh, cry, and delight in the portraits of his many varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

Perfect Narration, Perfect Book
Revisado: 04-18-21
Having Nicholas Ralph, who plays James Herriot in the new version of All Creatures Great and Small, is the perfect choice. His joy is evident, the pronunciation is spot-on, and as you listen you feel as if you’re in the middle of the story. It’s the right connection between the series and books.
In all, the updated Audible version introduces Yorkshire, Herriot, and the supporting cast, to a new fermentation of viewers and listeners. With all the changes and turmoil we face in our world today, it’s nice to go back 80+ years to a simpler time, one which this book, and the Masterpiece series, convey extremely well.

Full of riveting details and untold stories, The British Are Coming is a tale of heroes and knaves, of sacrifice and blunder, of redemption and profound suffering. Best Book Ever on Revolutionary War
Revisado: 08-11-19
I’ve read a number of them, and this is, by far, the best, most complete, most engaging, most endearing of all I’ve read to this point. I cannot wait for the second volume to come out, as I’ll be listening the first minute it arrives. The author includes facts and stories other books have omitted, or lightly glossed over. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about this amazing moment of our history.
Atkinson is the gold standard of history writing. I am now off to listen to his trilogy in WWII.

Historia
Originally published in six volumes, which sold more than one million copies, Carl Sandburg’s Abraham Lincoln was praised as the most noteworthy historical biography of Sandburg’s generation. He later distilled this monumental work into one volume that critics and readers alike consider his greatest work of nonfiction, as well as the most distinguished, authoritative biography of Lincoln ever published.
Growing up in an Illinois prairie town, Sandburg listened to stories of old-timers who had known Lincoln. By the time this single-volume edition was competed, he had spent a lifetime studying, researching, and writing about our 16th president.

The Best of them All
Revisado: 12-01-18
I’ve read 37 biographies on Lincoln over the past twenty years. Sandburg’s biography brings an emotional reading none have done quite so well as this. There is an insight to Lincoln different than most, and combined with the poetic writing of Sandburg there becomes a connection between subject, author, and reader / listener.
I’ll admit, the words to close the book brought me to tears. I asked the question out loud to no one in particular, was there a greater president, greater man, than Lincoln?

5 Hours of Listening Pleasure!
Revisado: 01-29-13
What did you love best about A Road Well Traveled?
The various biographies of men who made the automobiles, and how these various lives intertwined to create companies that lasted decades, and some over a century. Most of these men came from similar backgrounds, and worked hard to make it in a serious competition to stand out in the crowd. It seems many of these men have been forgotten to us today, but their stories are worth hearing, and appreciating.
What other book might you compare A Road Well Traveled to and why?
Engines of Change (by Paul Ingrassia). While Paul Ingrassia takes on 15 significant automobiles, and goes into even more details on the "fine 15", both books appreciate the hard work put forth by many men, and the difference their automobiles made.
What does Baron Ron Herron bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
It's a pleasure listening, and the voice fits the stories.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I had the time, yes. I listened to it in my car every moment I was driving.
Any additional comments?
If you love automobiles (I do), and love can-do spirit of men at the turn of the 19th Century, than you will appreciate this book.
