When 11-year-old Langston's mother dies in 1946, he and his father leave rural Alabama for Chicago's brown belt as a part of what came to be known as the Great Migration. It's lonely in the small apartment with just the two of them, and Langston is bullied at school. But his new home has one fantastic thing. Unlike the whites-only library in Alabama, the local public library welcomes everyone. There, hiding out after school, Langston discovers another Langston, a poet whom he learns inspired his mother enough to name her only son after him.

Narrator brings the story to life!

We were so glad we came across this reading of Peter Pan! This narrator is incredible! He absolutely brings the story to life! He has beautifully well timed pauses, thoughtful voice inflections, does consistent voices for each character that makes you forget that you’re just listening to someone read. We were fully immersed in this book thanks to the excellent narrator.

The one good thing about this narrator is that she reads quite loud and clear. However, her voice is very robotic. It literally sounds like it’s being read by Siri. There were no dramatic pauses, no inflection of the voice, no emotion, no difference in the characters speaking. It was just the same up, down, up, down inflection no matter what was going on in the book. We didn’t make it through a chapter with this one. I’m sad that I wasted one of my credits on it.

Quiet voice, very little expression

We tried to listen to this version as it came free with our subscription but ultimately we turned it off halfway through the second chapter and found a paid version of this book to listen to instead. The narrator spoke very meekly and quietly, we found ourselves having to turn the volume very high just to hear her. The story was monotonous, quite expressionless, and there was not much change in her voice for the characters. We all found it hard to follow because of this.

Being Native American, my children and I very much appreciated the respect given to the native characters in this book. They honored their language, customs and gave them character more grounded in reality than theatrics. All other aspects of this book were clearly well thought out and researched. I was proud to play this audiobook for my children. They were enthralled with the entire story! Thank you for this beautiful perspective, Linda Sue Park.
