Historia
Growing up with adoptive nisei parents, Susan Kiyo Ito knew only that her birth mother was Japanese American and her father White. But finding and meeting her birth mother in her early 20s was only the beginning of her search for answers, history, and identity. Though the two share a physical likeness, an affinity for ice cream, and a relationship that sometimes even feels familial, there is an ever-present tension between them, as a decades-long tug-of-war pits her birth mother’s desire for anonymity against Ito’s need to know her origins, to see and be seen.

I loved everything about this poignant and fascinating journey Ito takes us on during the search for her birth parents and to know and claim her own story. A stirring memoir and read.

Historia
One minute Elizabeth Crane and her husband of fifteen years are fixing up their old house in Upstate New York, finally setting down roots after stints in Chicago, Texas, and Brooklyn, when his unexpected admission—I'm not happy—changes everything. Suddenly she finds herself separated and in couples therapy, living in an apartment in the city with an old friend and his kid. It's understood that the apartment and bonus family are temporary, but the situation brings unexpected comfort and much-needed healing for wounds even older than her marriage.

Can’t listen just once

I loved the form of this wonderful book - the vignetttes and the telling. It’s a hopeful love story even while also being about heartbreak. I had not read anything by Crane before this book. I came across a recorded event she did with Leslie Jamison and was intrigued. Highly recommend this memoir.

Tremendous resource, beautifully narrated

I’m thankful to the poet friend who shared she was reading Tarot for Change. Based on her recommendation and my struggles with some questions, which arose in my life and in my art, I bought TfC. I don’t even know the Tarot. I think I’ve had 2 or 3 readings in my life? But this book and the concepts discussed were beyond valuable. Highly recommend to artists and seekers of all stripes and spots and temperaments. This book is a gem.
