Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 12-21-14
I love survival stories. I really did not like this one though. I appreciated the setting and the look into the nuances of Hawaiian culture, but this was not enough of an adventure for me. It was dull, I was disappointed and I wouldn't recommend it.

Decent Sequel
Revisado: 09-22-14
I really like Gus. But I really got tired of him being an alcoholic really fast. Won't give away any spoilers. If you are like me, you're anxious to find out what happened after the first book, so give this one a listen. Gus has so much potential, I want to know what he can do when he's sober.

Very standard stuff
Revisado: 09-22-14
This listen was so run of the mill. Just very standard stuff as far as plot and character development. Nothing special here. Cliche' comes to mind. Didn't bond with any of the characters and was unable to become invested in the story. "I'm getting too old for this ****" was the favorite line of the tale and used far too many times. Skip it. Three stars was generous.

Ugh
Revisado: 08-18-14
This is soooo bad. The beginning of the story includes too many minute details that just do not matter, so it takes longer than it should to get to the action. The narrator gets on my every nerve. Despite the fact that civilized society is crumbling around her and that cannibalism is now the in thing, she has plenty of snark in her tone and too many slap stick stupid jokes. We hear next to nothing about the people she cares about except for her dang dog and her husband and I'm really not sure which one she loves more, along with a nano second of her thinking "what about my parents?" Nothing about this is realistic. Zombie lore is what it is, this was just damn annoying.

Loved the relationship building in this story. It's almost like it's just about the relationship between the brothers and there just happens to be Zombies thrown in. The character development for the other characters is really good too, so much that you wind up caring a lot about those who even have small roles. Maberry manages to make each one matter. The relationship between the brothers is what I loved the most about this entire series. I would love to see this as a movie. I enjoyed and recommend.

Hate this character
Revisado: 05-20-14
I really just disliked this character. The world is ending and she decides to flee New York City on a bicycle? I've been to New York, I have issues envisioning this kind of thing. It did not come off as even the least bit imaginable for me. Somehow in the preview I missed the fact that this is about aliens and I dislike alien stories but that's probably more my fault than the authors. Nothing about this one I liked. sorry.

Historia
When 16-year-old Xander's older brother, Moto, left him at Vandenberg Airforce Base he only had one request - don't leave, no matter what. But there was no way he could have known that zombies would gather in groups big enough to knock down walls, and take out entire buildings full of people. That was before the rise of the horde! Now Xander is on the run, fleeing south to Port Hueneme to locate his brother, with nothing but his martial arts training and the katana blade left to him.

I didn't like it
Revisado: 05-19-14
I really like Luke Daniels as a narrator. I think his narration for The Iron Druid series is among my favorite listens but, it just didn't work with Rise of the Horde. He has such a smooth, ultra cool voice and demeanor that there was just no way I could buy into him being a 16 year old kid. Not enough about Xander's relationship with Moto was explained, I thought I had missed some important details so I went back to the beginning to take another listen. I didn't miss anything, it just isn't there, not could I figure out anything about his parents. Luke is good at doing a range of character voices which is nice when there are a lot of characters to keep track of. My biggest issue was accepting Luke as a typical teen even if he is skilled with a sword. As for the story, it's pretty typical zombie stuff. Overall, just not a favorite among what I have listened to in this genre.

I thought this listen was very luke warm. Had no problem accepting the premise. The main character was difficult for me to endure. She's a very loving mother concerned about the safety and security of her children but she is pretty clueless. Overall, it wasn't a bad way to kill time but it certainly wasn't a thrill either.

Jack, a sometimes humorous, sometimes philosophical ex-special operations pilot and soldier is one of the few left to struggle through the desolation left in the aftermath; seeking to survive as a new ferocious species emerges from the rubble, hungry and unrelenting. Will his special-forces training be enough? Will he be able to keep his children safe and guide the few survivors through perils that now roam the world they once knew? Or will the hordes that now own the night prevail, forever removing the last of mankind from existence?

Trust the reviews
Revisado: 03-07-14
I should have trusted the reviews on this one. The narration is pretty darn terrible. It very much sounds like Snagglepuss is doing the majority of the narration here. Or Nicholas Cage. The Female narration (Lynn) is just terrible. There is no way I buy her as an army sergeant. Also, there are sound effects and they don't add to the story in a good way. In fact, they are pretty distracting. There are a few different folks narrating and most of them sound like very bad actors reading a script. No conviction at all. This is what stands out most about this story, not the story itself. Spend your credit on something else.
