The story was a bit draggy and rambling, but the narrators kept me engaged. I'm glad I stuck with it and overall enjoyed it.

Historia
My name is Mercy Thompson Hauptman, and my mate, Adam, is the werewolf who leads the Columbia Basin Pack, the pack charged with keeping the people who live and work in the Tri-Cities of Washington State safe. It’s a hard job, and it doesn’t leave much room for side quests. Which is why when I needed to travel to Montana to help my brother, I intended to go by myself.

a great addition to the ongoing story

Slightly more laid back story this time, which I thoroughly enjoyed. There was quite a bit of character growth, hinting at potential interesting possibilities. Overall, a great addition to the series.

Enjoyable story, but the narrator was difficult.
Revisado: 10-12-22
I enjoy the authors writing style and imagination. It was an inventive reimagining of one of Poe's stories. However, the narrator was hugely distracting. Their over-enunciation and weird pauses were very jarring on the ear and pulled you out of the flow of the story.

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

Good atmospheric horror with a touch of Lovecraftian dread. Narrator want as bad as some say, just dragged a bit. Bump the speed up to 1.1 or 1.15 and it flows much better.

interesting story, narration just to over the top
Revisado: 01-22-21
Good start to an interesting story, but the narrator's SUPER smarmy over the top voices for the antagonists was painful to endure. I'll admit to skipping through quite a bit of their dialogue.

Revisado: 09-26-20
It took a bit to grip me, but ended up being a very interesting story. I'll definitely be getting the other two books. My only quibble is the narrator. When she's doing dialogue, she's very expressive and does a great job. When it's just exposition though, her voice goes so low and whispery she's hard to understand and tends to be rather monotone.

Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

But Shining is now something more than human. And the scrapyard is no longer just a scrapyard, but a place full of secrets. This life she has built, while empty, is predictable and safe. A window in a much larger story
Revisado: 01-09-20
I was a bit on the fence when I finished this story. I liked it, but it felt incomplete and left me hanging. I hope this is just a starter short story for a much larger universe, because it has a ton of potential. The story has many of the standard alien invasion tropes, but with several interesting twists that I would love to hear more of.
The starting narration was a bit nasally and off-putting, but give it about half an hour and the narrator really hits her stride.

A bit slow to start, but a great story overall
Revisado: 11-26-18
Ok, I almost didn't buy this book based on some of the reviews so let me add another viewpoint.
First, many have complained about the narration. If you're used to Luke Daniels narration of Mr. Hearne's other books, I can see why Xe Sands is hard to listen to at first. They are very different stylistically, and she's a bit soft spoken; so yes, for her first segment, you really need to listen. Have patience and your ear will get used to her voice and delivery, which is really quite good.
Second, we're diving into a whole new world. There is a TON of information to take in the first few chapters. The different countries, magic system, and antagonists (who both happen to be giants, so a touch confusing) are all thrown at you in what seems like the middle of a story without any background. Stick with it and pay attention, it will make sense as the story progresses. I found it initially a bit confusing but worth it.
Overall, I really loved this book and look forward to the next installment. Just remember there is a lot of detail to begin with. This is definitely not a story you can start and only listen with half an ear and have it still make sense.
