a dozen emotions brilliantly entertwined

The author grabs your heart and won't let go. A story of seemingly impossible struggles and the small girl who rose triumphantly above them. The pictures are vividly painted and characters expertly developed. I couldn't stop listening.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The reader is boring at best. This book could be funny, actually hilarious, if delivered in the comedic style in which it was written.
How could the performance have been better?
Lose the 1955 Disney announcer sound and replace it with a style that brings the adventures to life and I'd probably laugh until I cried...
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The stories are entertaining IF you can get past the reading.

Very real, very entertaining, very well read. Characters were well developed but not overdone. Narrator easy to understand and accents believable.

the story dragged
How could the performance have been better?
the main character, Dan Levette, sounded as though he was reading his script, not acting it out. That is fine if you are listening to a "read" book but for a theatrical reading it was unnerving. Most of the characters were unbelievable, the exceptions being the Chinese actors who were good for the most part.
