Bittersweet
Revisado: 10-12-22
High drama and very evil bad guys served with a bit too much syrup about how lovable all the good guys are. Raises some interesting questions about whether being able to read minds would be a good thing or a bad thing.

Historia
It’s been thirteen years since doctors declared Libby Ross-Velasquez a goner. Yet here she is - cancer-free. So why doesn’t she feel more alive? Sure, Libby’s husband, Shiloh, has been distant. One of their daughters has a serious health condition. And her father’s death hovers over Libby like a rain cloud. Still, this eternal optimist knows she’s the winner of the existential lottery. But when her forced cheer isn’t enough to keep her family from catching her blahs, she decides to fly them all to Vieques. The Puerto Rican island is where she and Shiloh fell in love.

Struggled Through
Revisado: 08-24-21
I really didn't like Libby, the main character of this novel. She described herself as a calm, unflailing optimist, but throughout the novel, she sobbed and whined and predicted doom. She also over-mothered her diabetic daughter to an obnoxious extent and procrastinated confronting problems in her marriage. It was a struggle to finish the book although I've really enjoyed other books by Camille Pagan.

Historia
Josie Bianci was killed years ago on a train during a terrorist attack. Gone forever. It’s what her sister, Kit, an ER doctor in Santa Cruz, has always believed. Yet all it takes is a few heart-wrenching seconds to upend Kit’s world. Live coverage of a club fire in Auckland has captured the image of a woman stumbling through the smoke and debris. Her resemblance to Josie is unbelievable. And unmistakable. With it comes a flood of emotions - grief, loss, and anger - that Kit finally has a chance to put to rest: by finding the sister who’s been living a lie.

Historia
Doremus Jessup, a newspaper editor, is dismayed to find that many of the people he knows support presidential candidate Berzelius Windrip. The suspiciously fascist Windrip is offering to save the nation from sex, crime, welfare cheats, and a liberal press. But after Windrip wins the election, dissent soon becomes dangerous for Jessup. Windrip forcibly gains control of Congress and the Supreme Court and, with the aid of his personal paramilitary storm troopers, turns the United States into a totalitarian state.

Plunged Expectations
Revisado: 06-02-20
I had high expectations for this book given its famous author and the similarities between its proposed story and the current, pompous, racist, self-serving, government of President Trump. The book, however, was an exaggerated parody of the present from a writer in our past, instead of an insightful look at how abominable real governments can be. The lies and conceits of all of the presidential candidates were extreme, and the excesses, oppression, and violence of the victors were non-stop over the top. All of this is appropriate for a parody, but tiring when a real message is so readily at hand.

An Important Story Ruined
Revisado: 05-30-20
This research and understanding of Cuban culture and history before and during its Castro years was ruined for me by the triteness of the love stories thrown in. So many of the characters are utterly gorgeous people who fell in love at first sight. Why is everyone so gorgeous? Why was it so common to fall in love at first sight? The real world isn't like this, and the syrupy romanticism here made the rest of the novel less believable and less potent.

Historia
In this first-ever translation of Lu Yao’s Life, we meet Gao Jialin, a stubborn, idealistic, and ambitious young man from a small country village whose life is upended when corrupt local politics cost him his beloved job as a schoolteacher, prompting him to reject rural life and try to make it in the big city. Against the vivid, gritty backdrop of 1980s China, Lu Yao traces the proud and passionate Gao Jialin’s difficult path to professional, romantic, and personal fulfillment - or at least hard-won acceptance.

Not My Cup of Tea
Revisado: 05-23-20
I liked the exposure to Chinese life during its revolutionary past, and there were some interesting insights about attitudes toward relationships and class, but I had very little sympathy for the heartaches most of the main characters caused themselves and the very vulgar language that regularly popped up.

Wonderful and Necessary
Revisado: 03-05-20
Women need to read this book to confirm that this is happening to all of us, and we need to start shouting, not whispering. I literally do not know any women who have not been sexually harassed. Not one, even though I know thousands of women. Men need to read this book to wake up to how inappropriate they are and to learn that women are more and more willing to fight back.
