A few books in and... I just can't anymore
Revisado: 08-31-21
The inner monologues are excessive. Seriously, you're beating a dead horse here. We get it. You don't have to explain every syllable of every sentence spoken in the book as well as pepper it with a paragraph of repetitions, misinterpreted meanings and intentions in said excessive inner monologues. The main character is supposed to be smart, at least that's what keeps being reiterated, but her actions and thoughts don't equal smart, so the author has to keep reminding us...(hard eye-rolling and finger gun to the temple). She's constantly making wrong assumptions, has zero self esteem, is a terrible mother that continues to let her 9yr old daughter play matchmaker, and makes every easily explainable situation 10 times worse by constantly lying or skirting the truth. I can't take it anymore. I'm quitting mid book and washing my hands of it. I have well over 250 books in my library and this series is only the 2nd one I've quit. The other had a terrible narrator, but wasn't badly written. It's too bad too, because I'd like to find out what happens in the open murder cases for this book, but Violet is so damn infuriating, it's a struggle to try and enjoy it anymore. Oh, and her interactions with the jerk coworker are equally painful to sit through.
Are there any series out there where the characters actually learn from their mistakes and experiences and evolve from book to book.... I'm ready for a bus to come along and flatten Violet. Harvey can take it from here.

cute, but frustrating
Revisado: 03-23-20
If you can get past the lead character making a series of terrible relationship and otherwise decisions book after book, then the rest is pretty good. I guess I just like my lead characters to be stronger than this one. She seems more like a bumbling oaf sidekick than a lead. This is only my second cozy mystery series and I have to say, the Zion Sawyer series is far superior. It's still entertaining and fun, though I did spend a lot of time thinking of numerous ways this character could have handled things so much better, and stood up for herself at least occasionally... headache.

It gets better
Revisado: 10-04-19
If you can make it through the narration of the first book, the next two are much better. I can only assume others had the same problem with the voices and cadence of the first book, because that was addressed and honed in better for the next two. Good story and good characters, but the struggle is real to get through the first book. The voice given to the main character sounded at least 20+ years older than the character was supposed to be, so believability and some confusion were always present. Overall, I enjoyed all the books, but it took me a few tries (quitting and returning a few weeks later, repeat) and a lot of determination to make it through the first one.

Made myself keep listening
Revisado: 04-02-19
...but wish I were a quitter (think I've only ever bailed on one book, wish I'd made this #2, in every sense of the meaning). We'll just say this wasn't my kind of book. I like books that leave me happy and satisfied that the time I spent listening was worth it. This one was disturbing to me, so I was wanting to hurry up and get to the end so I could be done with it. There was suspense if your looking for that, but not full of anticipation, but rather with dread.

The last thing Boston Detective D. D. Warren remembers is walking the crime scene after dark. Then, a creaking floorboard, a low voice crooning in her ear… She is later told she managed to discharge her weapon three times. All she knows is that she is seriously injured, unable to move her left arm, unable to return to work. My sister is Shana Day, a notorious murderer who first killed at fourteen. Incarcerated for thirty years, she has now murdered more people while in prison than she did as a free woman.

My Favorite DD book yet
Revisado: 12-29-18
This was interesting and suspenseful all the way through. The ending was satisfying, in the sense that it didn't leave you amped up on adrenaline from a climatic ending. This book had a great cool down period at the end that leaves the reader with a satisfying "this story is complete" feeling. Unlike some books that have a decent ending, but you feel like they ended too quickly and you left needing a bit more.
