Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Great Story!

I love the narrator and this is the second time I've listened to this book. It would be a horrible thing to have to live with if it became a reality.

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

Rare Find!
Revisado: 09-21-12
What made the experience of listening to Major Pettigrew's Last Stand the most enjoyable?
The characters and the narrator!
Have you listened to any of Peter Altschuler’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No and only because the stories don't appeal to me but I will be sure to keep watching for performances to come.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I didn't have an extreme reaction but it did make me laugh and smile with a feeling of warmth and understanding of all of the characters.
Any additional comments?
While it may seem a simple story it's actually just a joy to listen to and shouldn't be casually passed over. It really was a perfect listen!

Ok but not even close to Outlander
Revisado: 04-13-12
What did you like about this audiobook?
Not really.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
She could have come up with a more realistic way for her time travel theme to have taken place.
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
No.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
No. I was bored and found it so unbelievable I couldn't finish. I read the whole Outlander series twice and listened to it three times, this doesn't even compare.

Revisado: 01-19-11
I can't finish this one. 50% useless fluff to the point of being insulting. I felt like the author didn't think his reader/listeners could retain anything said in the previous paragraphs. Very repetitive on descriptive information. 25% somewhat interesting facts and a slim 25% on action. Almost like a repeat of National Treasure but not nearly as good. When I find myself fast forwarding through a book I know it's time to turn it off.

Too long due to too many filler words
Revisado: 01-07-11
I really tried to listen and it had so many possibilities but if the writer had left out 1/2 of the filler words it would have been a hit. I know the wording needs to be of the time period but it was like the writer was trying to find how many ways to say the slang words God's teeth, God's death, God's eyes, blah, blah, blah. Just too much. It's like a book that had too much profanity. I finally had to put it away and maybe (that's a big maybe) I'll finish it when there is just nothing left to listen to on a rainy day. Too bad, I would have loved to listen to the whole series but won't risk buying another one.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: When it comes to author/narrator pairings, nobody tops James Lee Burke and Will Patton in the Robicheaux thrillers. Beloved Burke hero Detective Dave Robicheaux here returns to New Iberia to solve a series of grisly murders. Seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis Parish have been brutally murdered. While the crimes have all the telltale signs of a serial killer, the death of Bernadette Latiolais, a high-school honor student, doesn’t fit.

So many possibilities but...
Revisado: 07-01-10
I had great hopes for this book but the first thing that turned me off was more vampire plots, I just can't get into it now nor in my childhood days. I can't see what the American obsession is with all these story lines. I loved The Stand, this is not even close. I listened to it all but would not buy a follow up book. Over all I only gave it a 2 because I liked the beginning. Wish it had been better.

This book just outright stunk. There was maybe 1/8 of the book worth listening too. I finally turned it off in the last hour of what felt like Bible study. So much potential totally lost.

Historia
Return to James Lee Burke's "timeless, parallel universe" with detective Dave Robicheaux, as he investigates the murders of two women, tries to prove one man's innocence, and faces an enemy unlike any he has ever known. Gothic, dense, brutal, touching, and always compelling, Jolie Blon's Bounce is classic storytelling from a writer who has been dubbed "the Faulkner of crime fiction."

My favorite so far
Revisado: 07-16-09
I have listened to all of James Lee Burke's books on audio in sequence and this is my favorite so far. Burke has such a wonderful way of making you feel like you are truly "there" each step of the way. As far as the narrator Mark Hammer, I love him! The first book was with Will Patton and I love him too but I've not had a problem with Mark's reading. On to the next book...
