Slow, Endless Detail
Revisado: 01-03-25
This was my first time reading this author, and honestly, it's such a slog. I'm about halfway thru and losing the will to live. To say it's slow-moving is the understatment of the year. I love police procedurals and I don't mind rich details, but this is ridiculous. I have no idea what the characters have to do with each other. So many are just caricatures. I think this is my last time trying this author.

Sir Roger Parkes is a man of some influence in the West Country. When he loses touch with his youngest daughter, he has a word with the Assistant Chief Constable of the local force. It's not a police matter, he is told, but if Sir Roger wants to pursue it privately, there is a lady who might be able to help-two of them, actually.

Not his finest
Revisado: 12-29-24
The story is completely preposterous. The "rescue" crew could have been arrested for trespassing and false imprisonment. Lane & Emily set up a business without a business license. Why didn't the father just go in the daytime and demand to see his daughter? Made no sense. I still love the smith series!

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Very convoluted
Revisado: 12-11-24
The story line was practically incomprehensible. Ridiculous on its face, needlessly convoluted. And then a dramatic scene at the end, only to turn the page and everything is magically fine. All the books in this series require a degree of suspension of disbelief but this one really stretches credulity. The lovable 3 pines characters barely make an appearance. I fear this series has well and truly jumped the shark. But i actually enjoyed the narrator and his accent!

Historia
It's been 17 months since the Bloodsmith butchered his first victim, and Operation Maypole is still no nearer catching him. The media is whipping up a storm, and the top brass are demanding results, but the investigation is sinking fast. Now isn't the time to get distracted with other cases, but Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh doesn't have much choice. When Benedict Strachan was just 11, he hunted down and killed a homeless man. No one's ever figured out why Benedict did it, but now, after 16 years, he's back on the streets again.

Incomprehensible
Revisado: 11-10-24
It starts out normal, introducing Lucy and her funny sidekick Dunc, but 2/3 of the way thru turns into complete fantasy. Multiple storylines left hanging. I have no idea who the various killers actually were. I love Stuart's books but that was truly awful. Great narration tho!

Historia
From the outside, Glenfarach looks like a quaint, sleepy village, nestled in the heart of Cairngorms National Park, but things aren't what they seem. The place is thick with security cameras, and there's a strict nine o'clock curfew, because Glenfarach is the last safe haven for people who've served their sentences but can't be safely released into the general population. For Detective Constable Edward Reekie, this was supposed to be a simple delivery job—drive his new boss up to HMP Grampian and collect Marky Bishop, take him to Glenfarach, then head back home again.

Historia
When a local man, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, goes missing, his parents have good reason to be concerned. Emily Willows is a friend of the family and says that she knows just the person to find him - and, as Summer Lane soon points out, the fact that this also fits in with Emily's plan to set up her very own detective agency is surely just a fortuitous coincidence.

Ridiculous story
Revisado: 12-24-23
The storyline is profoundly silly. Just get in the car and leave and call the police. The narrator is completely flat and uninspiring. It's a shame because I enjoy his other series. However I would avoid this book at all costs.
