Historia
Jake Leonard has more than his share of trouble. He’s close to 40 now and still suffers from bipolar disorder and the painful memories of the psychotic episodes that derailed his life and sent him behind bars. He lives in the rural South, where he spends his days breaking horses and his nights training dogs in solitude. His 19-year-old girlfriend Nikki is the daughter of the sheriff, and she’s just getting worse with drugs, alcohol, and satanic metal.

A jagged trip down a dark path.

The Ruin Season had it's odds stacked slightly against it; I picked it up right after the absolutely magnificent Gone to see the River Man. But it beat those odds and solidifyed K.Triana as one of my new favourite authors.
TRS follows the life of Jake, a nearly forty year old dog trainer whose life takes a twisted turn when he gets involved with a nineteen year old Nikki, a firecracker, party girl and the daughter of the local sheriff.
Their relationship is a catalyst to a series of events that will shake up the entire town.
Not a lot can be said about the plot without spoilers, but Triana manages to avoid many of the clichés that many less talented writer would surely fallen victim. Basically none of the scenarios went where I thought they would go.
The story itself is nothing special, but Triana writes the broken characters with such empathy that it is hard not to care about them.
And oh boy does he do a fantastic job in describing the turmoil in Jake's mind. Many of the scenes where Jake tries to fight the darkness of his mind had my heart pounding and palms sweating.
While not as horrific as Gone to see... The Ruin Season is nothing short of a magnificent book. Made better by the stellar narration.
Highly recommended!
