Historia
Eighteen-year-old Aidan Salt isn't a superhero. With his powerful (and unpredictable) telekinetic abilities, he could be one if he wanted to, but he doesn't. He's unambitious, selfish, and cowardly, and he doesn't want to have to deal with all the paperwork required to become a professional superhero. But since the money, fame, and women that come with wearing the cape are appealing, he decides to become the first supervillain the world has seen in more than 20 years: Apex Strike.

A social reject with 'super powers' thinks world owes him and goes to become a public nuisance. Study? Self-Improve? Stay consistent? That's for the chums. Aidan knows best. The minute of fame in media is all that matters. When the consequences of his short lived strategic genius come to bite his behind a government conspiracy swipes him up.
Personally, the gaining in contemporary fame genre of 'realistic' superheroes is a great way to remind a wider audience of the age old adage of power corrupting, and (occasionally) what the average Joe can do to stand up to the oppressive as-is rule. In 'Almost Infamous: A Supervillain Novel' MC follows his animalistic - reproduction, substance abuse, social rank -desires and is more like a leaf in the wind, being a nuisance to everyone.
Conclusion: 2/5. Listened on Audible included in the plus catalogue. Narrated by: Nicholas Techosky. 'Almost Infamous: A Supervillain Novel' read as 'A Confederacy of Dunces' in contemporary setting with people with super powers. The pay is crap, but the tips keep the lights on in her personal haunted mansion and her pantry stocked with ramen. Life is about as normal as it gets for an ex-necromancer hiding among humans - until the society that excommunicated Grier offers her a second chance at being more than ordinary. Too bad no one warned her the trouble with being extraordinary is it can get you killed.

MC an orphaned necromancer young adult woman living in a magical (on purpose) haunted house, suddenly finds herself in the midst of a political struggle of secret society of magic users and folklore creatures to be designated as the next head of said society. Experiencing an exponential growth of single men of marriageable age surrounding and wooing her, who will she choose? Gentle but rough ex-military werewolf, who has naught but his heart to give or the enigmatically (r. inheritor to generational wealth) charming vampire?
Magic system uses material, verbal and somatic components. Some episodes of The Real Housewives has less drama than 'How to Save an Undead Life'. The love triangle (or is it a square by the end of the book?) really is targeted at young teen women audience.
Conclusion: 2/5. Listened on Audible included in the plus catalogue. Narrated by: Hailey Edwards. 'The Twilight Saga' did it better. Props to the OG. HSUL doesn't have any memorable qualities to make it stand out from the rest of the young adult (teen ) targeted bad boy paranormal romance novels. Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Revisado: 04-06-25
Pump your fists in the air for existential dread ~whoo hoo~! In the future where humanity is the bottom of the barrel scraper of interstellar societies, how far will humanity go to stay competitive with other sentient species? Humans of Earth have a choice to make reaching 75th birthday, go on living as normal or sign up for interstellar service. Undergo rumored rejuvenation treatment to gain second youth in the service of colony defense forces (CDF).
Author does a good one-two punch to the gut of the readers' by defining what makes a person - a person. With technology to digitalize the human consciousness only loosely defined (and even more loosely followed) rules by CDF protect the digitalized consciousness from forever hell in the service of the greater good for the humanity. 'Old Man's War' portrays interstellar colonization as scramble for Africa, where the boots on the ground and first come first serve, military might backing any claims has importance over legislature. A multitude of alien species is introduced, most following the prime example of 'The Thing', portraying aliens as truly alien to human sensibilities.
Distance in space doesn't exist. Most travel between different solar systems takes months, duh. The grunt's on the scene of action perspective really adds to the bleakness of the human condition. Making the reality of how humans were made for Earth (not just physically but also psychologically) ever more obvious.
Conclusion: 3/5. Listened on Audible for 1 credit. Narrated by: William Dufris. Loved the existentially nihilism and pointlessness of... [territorial expansion by military force/rejuvenation having given up all material possessions and connections up till then/human way of life and erring]... things. Didn't appreciate the romantic aspect and implied existence of some sort of sould mate that carries over genetically to partial clone of the individual. Pfft, romanticized notions of love as something other than physical proximity and attractiveness. Terrible value for the length of the book, buying it with USD- 2.04 $/hour ( 20.24 $ / 09 hrs 55 mins ).
Recommendation: 'The Forever War' by Joe Haldeman - 'Old Man's War' is clearly heavily influenced by 'The Forever War'. Haldeman's work offers more realistic take on space travel. Book one is an excellent standalone work, while Scalzi's work intentionally leaves on a cliff hanger will they-won't they. Also, Forever War concludes on an optimistic note.

A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over. For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters. Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end. He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it's impossible to escape the war's devastating effects on the world.

Unusual approach to isekai (summoned to a new world with body and memories of previous world) where story is told 10 years after, MC, John has been summoned to a mage war torn world. Having received a quest to retire he doesn't know what to expect, as with all his quests from this hellish quest giving system. As one of the few remaining mages alive John is playing a balancing game between keeping world from reaching doom (79 out of 100 doom points acquired) and surviving in a world that is undergoing what is a magic equivalent of nuclear fallout.
Michael Kramer's narration of John reminds me of Clint Eastwood, stereotypical retired sheriff who's seen and lived through worst fecal matter and deals with whatever comes his way the best way he knows how, by overwhelming force. 'Battle Mage Farmer' has two gears, idyllic slice of life farm life that every man dreams of and pedal to the metal, life on the line action sequences. 'Domestication' is living on the frontier in a fantasy world.
Conclusion: 4/5. Listened on Audible for 1 credit. Narrated by: Michael Kramer. Well paced, balanced between the two gears mentioned above plot. Readers get the world exposition in a natural way as John's past intersects with his retirement or protagonists learn more about themselves or the world around them. Fantasy sustenance farming world where magic exists. Ability to cast magic is hereditary and rare, but even more than that it is guarded zealously by those who have it, as a right of birth and a gift from gods that elevates them over the masses. In a necromancer magocracy ruled by 7 families, the MC, the future head of the family has sets off on his right of passage adventure to prove how good a necromancer (not at all), the worst terror to his enemies he is (Waldo Rabbit, the great and the terrible *chuckles*).
Story is witty through and through . The disconnect between the perception of what is common and the ethical values of black wizards to those of white mages, and the average person is like day and night. Making very disconnected conversations, where each party is thinking that the others are mad and they are the only sane person a plausible reality.
The forethought from political powers in play is at times like a chimpanzee banging two rocks together at times very adequate matching what you would expect. E.g. of former: A mage with aptitude in potion craft, didn't prepare any potions in advance; a spymaster with a wide network of spies and informants sees changing one's clothes to disguise oneself as the enemy and ruin their public reputation as ground opening. E.g. of latter: sabotaging a great family from within by financing rebellion in problematic lands; forming a defensive alliance with magic enforced mutual defense pacts.
Conclusion: 4/5. Listened on Audible included in plus catalogue. Narrated by: Garry Furlong. A master mage from necromancer (dark), Addams familyesqu, family with talents in defensive and potion craft magic (white). 'Waldo Rabbit #1' is a role model for unforeseen (strategic - long term) consequences by protagonists just stumbling around and doing their own (tactical - short term) thing. The trouble is...who is whose pet becomes entirely unclear; the man's consciousness is split between both creatures, and the little cat gets a far greater share of intelligence and wit than his hulking master.

MC gets isekai-ed (reincarnated in another world in his current body and memories) to... what? Prove social Darwinism is a lie? Make humanity great again? Basically, in a world of medieval level of technology and science speciesism is the driving force for forming of new cultures and communities.
Plot armor on the lil'guy is exceptional, he has no existential crisis or loose screws, immediately accepts his circumstances and shows no individualism. The saying 'the nail that sticks out gets hammered down' must breed true under communism.

DR:Introducing Innworld, Terrandria. Start w/TWI
Revisado: 01-25-25
Set in the same universe as the masterpiece web series "The Wandering Inn" (wanderinginn dot com) , "Gravesong" follows the Singer of Terrandria, Sara, as she arrives in the innworld. Having have found her in an empty crypt that stretches for miles upon miles, protagonist does what she can to survive. Each action has it's own counteraction, reaction, and as more and more unknown at the time reactions from the other people, forces in the Innworld mount up a disaster in the making moves from bad to worse.
For audiobook readers/listeners, "Gravesong" mostly has previously unknown characters and setting, taking place in Terrandria a whole previously little mentioned continent. For web series readers/listeners, that are up to date 10.30, "Gravesong" gives history and depth to fellow characters to who have been introduced to readers for a while now and whose life readers have been following for a while now, mostly through Rabbiteater's adventure. "Gravesong" can be viewed in part as a separate entry to the Innworld, reminding one of the first chapters of "The Wandering Inn", Erin having just arrived on the Floodplains outside the Liscor, Laken and his quiche in Riverfarm, Ryoka stumbling into people's lives.
Cara's personality is quite unlikable. When around "people in power" and receiving "orders" from them Cara acts like a brat, moments later in the book, she gives orders to others and expects them to be obeyed. Her style of discussion when being engaged in such, to prove her stubborn and facetious position is extremely aggressive, confrontational if not outright ad hominem. The premise of democracy is that all people are equal under the law, in the Innworld classes literally make this point null. Cara's lack of knowledge of said fact is understandable, her having just arrived in the Innworld and all, but one can imagine having issues sympathizing with her position, when she takes a stand against meritocracy without providing any sound proof, fact or reason for it. Hard to decide between a brat or a prat.
Conclusion: 3/5. Listened on Audible 1 credit. Narrated by: Andrea Parsneau. If you have not finished "The Wandering Inn" audiobooks and web series, that's where you should start. If you have finished TWI, "Gravesong" is like Cara chapters and Cara is like Ryoka without lusting for immortals (yet), but with all the mental issues and trauma, if different, as Ryoka. Unlikable main protagonist, maybe on purpose, then kudos to the author, and mesmerizing and immersive literary fantasy world. Terrible value for the length of the book, buying it with USD- 3.00 $/hour ( 59.99$ / 19 hrs 58 mins ).
Heads up to new TWI listeners, didn't know this at the time of the purchase for the audiobooks, but original text can be found online (wanderinginn dot com) and the original work is ahead of the available on US Audible audiobook recordings. What do you do when a whole kingdom's resources are out to get you? You keep moving. Party of four reaches village, supposedly facing plague or some other infectious, widespread disease, only to find villagers in what appears to be in good health and celebrating harvest festival - recovery from sickness. Being a paladin with the premonition of the god you're devoted and having a gut feeling something is terribly wrong, paladin's vows make it so you can't take a single step back.
Book 2 of SSS has no direct interaction between the two parallel worlds, TTRPG NPCs and literary real world's TTRPG's players. Actions of either one have consequences on the other if you are paying attention akin to 'butterfly effect', without a direct overlap. To face the new challengs posed to the adventuring party, the party splits (note the book 2 title), Grumph and Gabrielle get the main attention this book. Building Grumph's spell casting catalogue and Gabrielle's battle prowess.
The TTRPG world gets a lot of exposition, with Thisle expanding on his background and meeting the prior paladin of Grumble as well as being the tool of God directing the party behind the curtain. TTRPG's players formed a new group and had an adventure of their own. Interesting to see how the Broken Bridge campaigns work in concert with the action taking place in the TTRPG world by the adventurers.
Conclusion: 3/5. Listened on Audible included in plus catalogue. Narrated by: Roger Wayne. Being true to book 1 of SSS, book 2 continues the witty literary world's exposition. Main downside for "Split the Party" is the short length of the audiobook. Parallel world's taking action (mostly) independently, the question continues to be, how do both intersect? Is Fithea, the traveling merchant of and for magic's guild the answer behind the Broken Bridge? Got me hooked and indecisive as to what to expect. Protagonists are the NPCs of a DnD'esque (Spells, Swords, & Stealth) table top role playing game. Fearing retribution of a tyrannic king for his summoned adventurers not having arrived on time and being from the last place where they might have been seen, the odd gathering of 4, - guard initially a paladin then a rogue, handyman initially a rogue then a paladin, half-orc initially a barbarian then a mage, village leaders daughter initially a mage then a barbarian - sets out to act in place of said adventurers. "Improvise. Adapt. Overcome." - Bear Grylls
The in TTRPG characters overcoming the simplified stereotypical notions of their species and prior career grants literary characters more realism. The approach of each of the main 4 protagonists to problem solving highlights their prior career, life paths/choices, which again makes protagonists more realistic. SSS is quite similar to "Critical Failures" by Robert Bevan, where CF brings players into TTRPG, SSS's narrative is building the preconception of NPC's becoming AGI.
The author continues to narrate two parallel realities throughout the book. One following TTRPG NPCs other of the real world, personally, the (literary) real world could have been used as a great introduction for the other reality, as is the feeling of both gaining awareness of the other is ever present. One hopes the author has thoroughly thought through as to what the end goal for the series is and what the conclusion of both realities coming in contact would be.
Conclusion: 3/5. Listened on Audible included in plus catalogue. Narrated by: Roger Wayne. A witty, in dialogue and literary setting following litRPG genre, story.
