The main character is unbearable. His description of his surroundings and the people he meets are incredibly annoying.
Except for the pig. And I'm sure that's because in the authors skewed idea of writing, something unpleasant is described as appealing. And I'm not particularly fond of pigs but twenty minutes into the book, I'd rather spend time with it than the protagonist.
Sorry. This books going back.

First let me say, Andy Weir is a phenomenal writer. If he can drag me through all the science and physics stuff and keep me wanting more, he HAS to be talented, right? This is the first of his I've read but it won't be the last.
Now for Ray Porter: he was Grace. I worried with him, I rejoiced with him and I mourned the loss of his friend. I agreed with his decisions. Porter was the character and I envy him his talent.

This book is so well written that despite the unfamiliar place-names and repeating family names and cousins and grandfathers, you're held in thrall by the story. The author gives solid grounds for contradicting the old stories and builds his speculation on those grounds for what is, ultimately, the unknowable definitive event.
Where facts are to be had, their source is cited.
THATS's what a history is supposed to be.

To be fair, I can’t empathize with a New York princess. Her whining about EVERYTHING really gets under my skin.. and a saint of a husband that indulges her every whim irritates me as well. Maybe it’s jealousy but still...
The narrator is probably wonderful in something else even though I had to speed her up to 1.5x.
All in all, I’m not happy with this book after 2 chapters but I AM delighted withAudibles return policy. I’ll be taking advantage of it .

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

some semi-literate teenager.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

she was incapable of pulling off a man's part and her women were stiff and /or valley girl.
she tried her best but she can't handle accents very well: her scotsmen kept lapsing into russian.

What character would you cut from How To Marry a Millionaire Vampire?

the author. the females were all pretty simple minded and weak willed.

Any additional comments?

if this was a first attempt: nice try, but i don't want to pay for first trys.

Would you try another book from Wilkie Collins and/or Josephine Bailey and Simon Prebble ?

I'd rather pull my own 2 front teeth than go through another Wilkie Collins book.

Has The Woman in White turned you off from other books in this genre?

Its certainly turned me off the genre for a good long while. At least male authors of the period.

Have you listened to any of Josephine Bailey and Simon Prebble ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The simple fact these narrators didn't even give a HINT of a yawn while suffering through all the surplus verbage entitles them not only to a chance to read to me again, they positively deserve medals for their efforts here.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I am very well acquainted with the writing style of this period: florid, loquacious, verbose.... but this? Collins made me want to scream. Collins made even the "heroine" female lead so insipid as to show her as barely conscious of her surroundings and helpless, timid, .....vapid.
The turns the story took were always apparent beforehand; the ending no surprise.
Bummer bummer bummer.

What made the experience of listening to First Grave on the Right the most enjoyable?

the characters are fleshed out and plots just out of normal range.

What other book might you compare First Grave on the Right to and why?

dare i say ALL of janet evanovich's books????

Have you listened to any of Lorelei King’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

lorelei king has a wonderful voice and uses it to best advantage in all she does.
