Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

the articles already posted all the good parts. the author always makes herself the moral center, so you know it's not *all* true lol. but overall it's also nothing surprising: everyone in silicon valley is a soulless grifter, hilarious that zuck tried to actually run for president tho lol.

Historia
In an age of miracles where our greatest heroes from history have magically, unexplainably returned to shake us out of our confusion and hate, Harriet Tubman is back, and she has a lot to say. Harriet Tubman and four of the enslaved persons she led to freedom want to tell their story in a unique way. Harriet wants to create a hip-hop album and live show about her life, and she needs a songwriter to help her. She calls upon Darnell Williams, a once successful hip-hop producer who was topping the charts before being outed on a BET talk show.

i love this concept and its characters. it would be really cool as a musical (or at least had an accompanying album lol) so that harriet's songs could come to life.

Historia
Ji-won’s life tumbles into disarray in the wake of her Appa’s extramarital affair and subsequent departure. Her mother, distraught. Her younger sister, hurt and confused. Her college freshman grades, failing. Her dreams, horrifying… yet enticing. In them, Ji-won walks through bloody rooms full of eyes. Succulent blue eyes. Salivatingly blue eyes. Eyes the same shape and shade as George’s, who is Umma’s obnoxious new boyfriend. George has already overstayed his welcome in her family’s claustrophobic apartment.

monika never takes her foot off the gas
Revisado: 12-27-24
definitely the best psychological horror i've ever read, certainly the most well-written villains i've ever read. i will be recommending this to everyone! i am also a sucker for inversions of all kinds, and this is full of thematic inversions. (even something simple like the role cannibalism plays is several types of inverted - not only does it flip the literal colonialist notion of predator/prey, it also flips the euphemistic [sexual] meanings of cannibalism.) the male villains are absolutely infuriating to read, which means they're perfectly written and absolutely true to life, with no exaggerations, that you will be put in mind of the georges and a jefferys you've met too. another inversion is that there's no release - at the end, there's a point at which most books would pull back the veil, say 'oh it's all fake, see she's better now' and it's the exact opposite lmao. the tl;dr is i can't wait to read more monika kim!
a note about the audiobook performer: if you listen with over-ear headphones like i did, you can hear her equipment turning off and on between takes. it's a little distracting bc it happens several times per chapter. she also has a pronounced midwest accent which may or may not bother you. (e.g. she says "bag" like "beg" etc.)

Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

millennial ww babyspeak makes me want to kms
Revisado: 12-15-24
someone PLEASE tell ww to speak like adults. i know it doesn't get you all the same benefits being a smol bean does, but i'm begging y'all to grow up and talk like adults, which i know is a lot to ask of a NONFICTION BOOK. a further pro-tip, don't say your book is intersectional and then explicitly only include the pov of actual ww but make a composite bw you can just stereotype about for 4 chapters. it's clear you had no black editors bc you compare bw to ugly, gnarled trees. (a bit of imagination + self-awareness could have offered better metaphors for that bit.) it's literally unlistenable - if i had to listen to one more 'patriarchy..... ugh🙄' from the authors, i was going to end it all. patriarchy is real and keeping myself busy or buying bday gifts from women-owned shops (REAL ADVICE GIVEN TO FIGHT THE PATRIARCHY BTW) is just not going to cut it. ww please take racism seriously and start looking OUTWARD instead of only at yourselves.

The Reservoir follows an unexceptional man in an exceptional time. We see our present-day pandemic world and New York City through the eyes of a former Wall Street veteran, Ridley, as he, in his enforced quarantined solitude, looks back upon his life. He examines his wins, his failures, the gnawing questions - his career, his divorce, his estranged daughter - and questions what it all means and who he really was.

a modern catcher in the rye for men who think that is actually a good book / dream wistfully of being haulden caufield. the main character was such a well-written a-hole it was hard to finish even at less than 2 hours; the best part of the book is when you finally get relief from his presence and spend time w his daughter. kudos to duchovny for crafting the character so intentionally.

Historia
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

this book seemed interesting and then i saw the top comment. thanks for selling me this book, karen. if it can inspire a one-star from some pearl-clutching white lady after only one sentence, it's definitely my kind of story. (honestly fainting over the f-word and taking gods name in vain... sweetie, just say you'd rather tone police than listen to the honest stories of black and brown folks in america.)
ANYWAY.
this is a wonderful, engaging story made even moreso by the author doing the audio performance. this is one of the best books i've listened to on audible.
