Historia
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

I’m not mad at it, but…
Revisado: 02-27-23
The narrator was personally too dramatic for my liking with Laura’s character. The storyline was good, but I also found myself wanting parts to hurry up during some of Laura’s parts. Some of it was overly descriptive and I couldn’t care for it too much. I wish more of the scenery was described because I didn’t get ‘spooky island’ feels.
I didn’t mind it, but I’m not really raving over it either.

I really wanted to like it more, but if veered into “Really? That’s not believable at all” territory.

Honestly, I was freakishly hooked!
Revisado: 02-20-23
*As always, this my opinion is subjective (duh) and intended to provide feedback on the effects the book left me feeling* NO SPOILERS HERE (EVER)
This was the first Lisa Stone book I've dipped my nose into. Mini background story on how quickly this book got me hooked: I picked it up as second book to read while in the middle of another and simply COULD. NOT PUT. IT. DOWN. A habit I seemed to have formed too quickly into my reading journey - Why do I keep doing this to myself?
Kudos to the narrator:
She crushed it. Period. Seriously, one of the most entertaining voices I've had the pleasure to follow along with during my experience as an ADHD reader who uses Audible to listen to the story as I read physical books.
What I enjoyed about this book:
Easily, the characters and how they kept true to their individual personalities. The book is set in a remote location near the thickest parts of Coleslaw Woods outside a small village called Merryless. Equally, the story also takes place in the city as it follows along another couple of characters. As an American reader who is fond of anything set outdoors secluded from civilization, this story was right up my alley; I found these parts of the book the ones I looked forward to the most.
The story is very much like a tree where all the characters in some way, shape or form, are connected with one another. The writing performed by Lisa Stone was eloquent and at the same time, it did not add any confusion as the story developed. It sneakily maintained a sense of creepy vibes that often had me channeling my inner Chris Pratt:
AAAANNNDDDD I'm going to stop right here in regards to the good I found in reading this book because I do not want to ruin it with an overenthusiastic review that may lead to spoilers. Now, with every good comes some bad, amirite?
What I could've done without:
The one (and only) thing I did not like about Stone's storyline is how it took a speedy crescendo, remained steady, and then slow-burned like torture.
At around 35% until about 55% of the book, I found it to be quite predictable; which it was. I felt as if this was the most 'slow burn' portion of the storyline, and in my opinion, it could've been shortened at least in half. Nothing about this is going to change the fact the book has already been printed and the slow-AF-burn still remains. I mention this more as a 'warning' in case you decide to pick it up - which I still think you should - and can be prepared for it.
Overall, I really liked this book will order a few more of Lisa Stone's books.
Happy reading,
L

*As always, this my opinion is subjective (duh) and intended to provide feedback on the effects the book left me feeling.*
I hate how much I wanted to read this book, because it was quite disappointing and I couldn't fully get into it.
The story line was okay. I mean, it wasn't baaad it was just... boring? Meh? I'm not really sure how to describe it. It could well come down to the fact that I tend to lean more towards gruesome books, and I totally understand that children getting hurt is gruesome. However, I feel like the story could've been less about how this man Tom, the father, self-loathes so damn much. Unless... that's what the author was secretly going for. I mention it because the summary of the book was sort of misleading. I genuinely thought this was going to be creepy (in an "It" kind of way) and it wasn't. Like, AT ALL.
I struggled to maintain interest and solidify how this book is considered to be 'horror', because it felt more like a crime thriller. It was ultra-slow burn which is, well, boring. It took everything in me to finish this book, and while I finished it in 4 days, the true motive behind my race to the end was solely to just move past it; to close it up and start another book. Two other things:
1. The cover art is dope AF and for that reason, and that reason only, I'm keeping it instead of donating it.
2. I enjoy reading along with audible books since it helps me stay focused, so if you think perhaps listening to the book on Audible instead of reading it, y'all, PLEASE. JUST. DON'T. The book is narrated by Doctor Who's very own Christopher Eccleston and good heavens he really contributed to my yawns. Dont believe me? sample ir and hope you don't fall asleep.
I despise sitting down to be the 'Negative Nance' everyone rolls their eyes at, but damn this book was rain on my parade. If you're still skeptical of my review, I encourage you to read it and pray your experience is far (faaaar) more frightening than mine was.
Happy reading/listening,
L

Too good to put down
Revisado: 02-08-23
I loved it!! First and foremost, I listen to my books on audibles as I read along, and this is my first Simone St. James book. I read it in 3 sittings and thought about wanting to read more when I was occupied doing things. The narrators were pleasing to hear, the story drew me in page after page and the fact that I was born in Nov . 29th was the cherry on top! Its a simple read that keeps you entertained.
