Israel. The small strip of arid land is 5,700 miles away but remains a hot-button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel, how many people actually know the facts? Here to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby.

Good audio book in the author's voice
Revisado: 06-28-24
The author is very pro-Israel, and her bias shows a lot. But she is quite honest about it (not trying to conceal her love of country). At times, her indulgence in the mythic history of the country is rather tiresome.
Although there is lots of good historical information and analysis in this book, her understanding of Zionism and anti-Zionism is essentialist, oversimplified, and frankly harmful in my opinion. This leads her to categorically reject the notion of Israel as a colonial state, which it clearly is in my opinion (I say this as a citizen of another colonial state). She is so essentialist at times that she speaks of Israel almost as a person, an active being of some kind. Her embrace of Zionist nationalism leads her into unhelpful language about "Israel's right to exist" and other intellectually lazy concepts. She also ignores the many human rights abuses and extremism that has characterized many Israeli governments of the last 75 years.
I still would recommend the book because her narrative is compelling and humanizing. Many of Israel's critics around the world would benefit from trying to empathize with the perspective of israelis, who have by necessity lived in a siege mentality for decades.

Historia
The vast right wing conspiracy has found its General Patton, and his name is David Kahane. Kahane's pseudonymous, satiric column for National Review Online, lampooning the Left via his Hollywood-radical persona - Stephen Colbert's liberal doppelganger - is must-listening for political aficionados of all stripes. Now, from the inside, Kahane proudly exposes the secret and not-so-secret winning strategies (and vulnerabilities) of the Left.

if you want to believe that your world, your country, your very existence boils down to an epic battle between good and evil, then maybe this will appeal to you. this is a red meat rant intended for an audience who already believes in the "evil" of the left.

Historia
Most people think of themselves as “good", but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad” - especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia, and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more, so we can sound cool at parties and become better people.

Entertaining and thoughtful

This book attempts to make moral philosophy fun. And to a large extent, it is successful! The narration is especially well done.

Historia
Two decades into the twenty-first century, the stagnation of living standards has become the defining trend of American life. Life expectancy has declined, economic inequality has soared, and, after some progress, the Black-white wage gap is once again as large as it was in the 1950s. How did this happen in the world’s most powerful country? And what happened to the “American dream”—the promise of a happier, healthier, more prosperous future—which was once such an inextricable part of our national identity?

Definitely recommend

Good insight into how political coalitions have shifted, especially within the Democratic Party. I am not completely convinced that the so-called Brahmin left is as dominant as the author claims, but he makes a good argument.

Historia
Books about the origins of humanity dominate bestseller lists, while national newspapers present breathless accounts of new archaeological findings and speculate about what those findings tell us about our earliest ancestors. We are obsessed with prehistory—and, in this respect, our current era is no different from any other in the last three hundred years. In this coruscating work, acclaimed historian Stefanos Geroulanos demonstrates how claims about the earliest humans not only shaped Western intellectual culture, but gave rise to our modern world.

An important critique
Revisado: 06-15-24
The author critiques the history of human origins research, not from the point of view of the accuracy of the research but rather focusing on how that research is "used" to legitimize power relationships in the modern world.
The book makes many excellent points, and should be ready by paleoanthropologists and archaeologists alike. At times the critique becomes facile and/or tenuous. And at times the author surely overstates the influence of human origins stories. But these shortcomings don't overshadow the importance of the overall critique.
The author's writing has what feels like a very sanctimonious tone to it, which is unfortunately made much worse by the audio narration.

Historia
When parents send their children off to college, Mom and Dad hope they'll return more cultivated, knowledgeable, and astute - able to see issues from all points of view. But, according to Ben Shapiro, there's only one view allowed on most college campuses: a rabid brand of liberalism that must be swallowed hook, line, and sinker.

Just a rant
Revisado: 06-15-24
This is not really a book. It's a rant, mostly filled with personal anecdotes and vitriolic language. The author's premise is identical to his conclusion.

The definitive book on QAnon from the reporter knows them best; Will Sommer explains what it is, how it has gained a mainstream following among Republican lawmakers and ordinary citizens, the threat it poses to democracy, and how we can reach those who have embraced the conspiracy and are disseminating its lies.

Revisado: 03-11-23
pretty informative, especially if you're not already quite familiar with Qanon. I find the narrator incredibly annoying, but maybe that's just me. the way he tries to alter his voice when reading quotes is so odd, particularly when doing a "feminine" voice.
