Historia
Celebrated crime master and two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke returns with a gorgeously crafted, brutally resonant chronicle of violence along the Texas-Mexico border. Sheriff Hackberry Holland patrols a small Southwest Texas border town, meting out punishment and delivering justice in his small square of this magnificent but lawless land. When an alcoholic ex-boxer named Danny Boy Lorca begs to be locked up after witnessing a man tortured to death by a group of bandits, Hack and his deputy, Pam Tibbs, slowly extract the Indian man’s gruesome tale.

Burke’s writing & Patton’s narration are a Brilliant pairing
Revisado: 05-07-25
Will Patton’s narration of JL Burke’s richly embroidered cultural identities and the history in which they live is a pure gift in Audible’s library. No writer captures the nuanced truths of his characters and the shameful, mostly hidden, cruel history of our country’s exploitation of people and place as does James Burke. And he somehow manages to find the streaks of gold in the souls of characters who are otherwise wretchedly bereft of obvious goodness. I want to live in every landscape he creates. To witness the stories there.

Exquisite sense of place and character development. Patton’s narration is the voice of the Bayou in every syllable!

Historia
Everything is peaceful in Tommerup, Denmark, until a young mother disappears in the middle of an idyllic summer day. There’s no trace of the missing woman when Chief Superintendent Liam Stark and Superintendent Dea Torp are called to investigate. The small town is on edge, rumors begin to fly, and blame is cast on Charlotte’s husband, who was the last to see her. When another person goes missing and Liam and Dea find a strange note linking the second missing person to the first crime, they suspect the disappearances may be the work of a serial killer.

Horrible Reading
Revisado: 01-13-24
I’m actually stunned that this book made it into Audible. The reading sounds like children in elementary school, the pace is strangely slow and the plot & writing of the novel itself is so predictable, one can almost “read ahead” even absent a written text. I’ve never written a negative review before ~ but no one should spend money on this “book”.

Childhood sweethearts William and Mary have been married for 60 years. William is a celebrated surgeon, Mary a devoted wife. Both have a strong sense of right and wrong. This is what their son, Joe O'Loughlin, has always believed. But when Joe is summoned to the hospital with news that his father has been brutally attacked, his world is turned upside down. Who is the strange woman crying at William's bedside, covered in his blood - a friend, a mistress, a fantasist or a killer?

Ahhh . . . His entwined characters
Revisado: 11-02-23
As a writer I so seldom meet characters in modern fiction as entwined, laudatory in their intentions, enmeshed in their criminal psychological frailties who are driven by such believable implausible narrative ~ so much so that I want to read Mr. Rebotham’s books a second or third time. They are subterranean, gorgeous in suspense. Rich. Every move his writerly touch makes is perfect.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

EXTRAORDINARY
Revisado: 01-23-23
At once incandescent in its lyrical prose, then crackling and popping with taut intelligent insight, wrenched with heartbreaking historical context ~ Prince Harry has given readers what will stand with the best classic work in literature ~ alongside Lucy Grealy, Mary Karr, Annie Dillard, Frank McCourt. The canon of American Literature is going to welcome this voice for a very long time.

Hire a Better Editor & Reader for 2nd Ed.
Revisado: 06-08-21
This story is important for many, many people. The experiences she shares, nightmarish to inspirational, are very much worth reading, understanding & are conveyed honestly. This is not an easy listen, however. The narration is whiny and overwrought as if the narrator is reading to young children. The writing is similarly burdened with needless, annoying cliches. If I hadn’t been determined to know her ultimate diagnoses, cruelly withheld until the final chapters; I wouldn’t have even suffered through fast forwarding the twenty-plus chapters. Ms Kephart’s awful medical experience deserved more professional attention prior to publication.
