Historia
From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor.

Fair and Mostly Unbiased
Revisado: 02-23-14
Strictly a portrait of Jesus from an historical prospective. Facts are interspersed with probabilities and likelihoods, but this book held my attention from beginning to end. This is one man's perspective based upon extensive work and study. In my opinion, it should be combined with the studies and reflections of others in forming one's opinions and beliefs.

The religious experience is an extraordinarily powerful force that can define and shape the communities it creates. Over the course of 24 lectures, Professor Jones takes a vibrant first look at the discipline known as religious studies and shows how other fields-sociology, psychology, anthropology, and phenomenology-have tried to explain the complex relationship between individuals, cultures, and faith.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

A Story of Pain, Suffering, Love, and Triumph
Revisado: 02-21-13
I always enjoy reading well-written and entertaining stories about other lands and other cultures. A Thousand Splendid Suns takes us on a journey through the lives of two Afghanistan-born women. It is a story of pain, suffering, and fear, but also of love and triumph over the odds. It caused me to ponder why some are born to a life of such intense suffering while others of us are born to lives of relative plenty. It also gave me cause to reflect on our country and our government and to ponder whether our actions help to relieve suffering or contribute to it. That one is a difficult call to make.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

A Work That Allows You to Live in the Time
Revisado: 02-21-13
Doris Kearns Goodwin obviously works endlessly on research. This audiobook not only educated me, but allowed me to feel as if I were living in the time period and walking the streets of Washington DC during the Civil War. She reveals the complexities of Lincoln and the men who served him and our country so well during this critical time in our history. A quite lengthy piece, I still had a feeling of disappointment when I completed it because it had been such an enjoyable journey. Suzanne Toren's narration was flawless and gave me the feeling and awareness that I was absorbing the author's viewpoint.

Historia
> The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and an icon for her generation, a 15-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip.

This audiobook was extremely well performed by Elizabeth McGovern. It was a pleasant story about an exceptional woman whose life spanned nearly the entirety of the 20th century. It is a story of not only who we were, but who we strive to be.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

A classic story with a near perfect performance of narration. I had the pleasure of feeling as if I were on the skiff with the old man. Listening took me back to my time in the Carribbean and the Atlantic many years ago. Simply an auditory pleasure.

The Baby Boom Generation's Big Sister
Revisado: 04-17-12
Any additional comments?
I eagerly anticipated the release of this book because I had a great appreciation for Ms. King's talent and always sensed that she was an exceptionally good and decent person. Her memoirs caused me to think about a generation of young people, many of whom seemed to become musicians, born during the second world war. There has been much said and written about the baby boomers and our effect upon society. However, it has been this immeadiately preceeding generation, born during the war, which have been our leaders and our guides, our big brothers and sisters. It is they who deserve much of the credit for the quality of life we have enjoyed.
If you can imagine sitting for several hours pleasantly and contentedly listening to an old friend share the stories of their experiences, you have a feel for the enjoyment you'll have experiencing this book. It's not perfect and I doubt any of us is capable of creating a truly accurate self-portrait, but Carole's stories and reflections will carry you through a journey of your own life and fill you with the warmth of remembering how very good it has been.
Just as it would be listening to any friend, sometimes her stories seem to go into excessive detail in some areas and leave out significant information in other areas. In the end, I think you'll close this book with the warm feeling of having spent time with an incredibly hard-working, talented, warm, and loving woman. You'll be a better person for the experience.

Historia
In his landmark best seller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant, in the blink of an eye, that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept?

Gladwell Has A New Fan

Any additional comments?
I'm always fascinated by psychology and enjoy understanding myself and my fellow man in greater detail. Blink made a major change in my method of thinking. I crave more data and information and believe with sufficient data, I can analyze and solve any problem. Blink made me consider that often, I need virtually no data at all to surmise a situation and respond to it properly and efficiently. This was the first Malcolm Gladwell book I have enjoyed, and I will look forward to learning much more from his other book offerings.

In late 2003, in his column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King called The Memory of Running "the best novel you won't read this year." This glowing endorsement of the audiobook resulted in Ron McLarty receiving a $2 million two-book deal from Viking Penguin. Also, Warner Brothers has shelled out big bucks for the movie rights to The Memory of Running, for which McLarty will write the script.

Marvelously Different!

Any additional comments?
I read several reviews before beginning this book and there was no indifference, people either loved it or hated it. I'll preface my comment by stating upfront that I love John Irving, John Updike, and Jack Kerouac. At times, I felt as if this novel was assembled from a couple dozen unrelated short stories and that the author had sat at the kitchen table contemplating how he might assemble all of these stories into a single novel. No matter how scattered and strange it may have seemed, it definitely worked for me!
This is a novel for people who enjoy life outside the norm and prefer their novels to be quirky yet humanly revealing. I certainly found it to give me the feel of an Irving or Updike novel.

An entertaining story which accurately depicts a slice of life at a small college in middle America. The strength of this novel are its characters. Quite simply, I was not prepared to say good-bye and I believe that is the best compliment that can be given to any novel. A marvelous story - a great performance by the narrator - and many enjoyable hours of listening.
