Historia
In 1919 Kitty Weekes - pretty, resourceful, and on the run – falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability in what was once a magnificent private estate, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis House - its plaster is crumbling; its plumbing makes eerie noises; and strange, cold breaths of air waft through the empty rooms.

Impressive Narrator
Revisado: 06-09-23
Mary Jane Wells ability to bring life to the characters kept me drawn into the story. She was able to do several unique accents and portray each character well. I thoroughly enjoyed the story with her narration and I look forward to the next collaboration between Simone St. James and Mary Jane Wells.

Historia
Welcome to Babylon, a typical sleepy Alabama small town, where years earlier the Larkin family suffered a terrible tragedy. Now they are about to endure another: 14-year-old Margaret Larkin will be robbed of her innocence and her life by a killer who is beyond the reach of the law. But something strange is happening in Babylon: traffic lights flash an eerie blue, a ghostly hand slithers from the drain of a kitchen sink, graves erupt from the local cemetery in an implacable march of terror.

Chilling

Honestly, this was one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. I don’t normally speak in hyperbole, but I was listening to this non-stop. I was completely entranced by this story, as well as the narrators incredible transformative voice. I felt like I was in the hot town of Mobile, at the center of this tragedy. The ending was very satisfying.

Historia
Remy is a tour guide for Carrow House, a notoriously haunted building. When she's asked to host seven guests for a week-long stay to research Carrow's phenomena, she hopes to finally experience some of the sightings that made the house famous. At first, it's everything they hoped for. Then a storm moves in, cutting off their contact with the outside world, and things quickly become twisted. Doors open on their own. Seances go disastrously wrong. Red liquid seeps from behind the wallpaper.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-08-21
I really like Darcy Coates. This has not changed but this novel was extremely frustrating. The amount of mental gymnastics that the characters perform is ridiculous. I mean, it is understandable for there to be some disbelief and attempt to hold on to previous beliefs, but the level that it goes to in this book is just STUPID. So they all know the house is haunted right? So why do they go in and start being shocked that the house is ACTUALLY HAUNTED? And when the haunting intensives, why do they ACT LIKE ITS NOT THE HOUSE WHEN THE HOUSE LITERALLY SCREAMS AT THEM THAT ITS HAUNTED????????

The dead talk - to the right listener. They can tell us all about themselves: where they came from, how they lived, how they died, and, of course, who killed them. Forensic scientists can unlock the mysteries of the past and help serve justice using the messages left by a corpse, a crime scene, or the faintest of human traces.

The narrator kills it
Revisado: 09-06-21
I love the topic of forensics so I was already interested in this book but honestly, I was captivated by the performance of the narrator. She goes above and beyond in her voice acting skills. From American, to Scottish, Irish, and various British accents, she brings to life the quotes of experts and general people in the book. I was enthralled by her ability to “become” the person she was speaking for. It’s a fascinating book and made ever better by the audio!

In these 10 eye-opening lectures by a practicing doctor and medical educator, you’ll walk through a series of medical mystery cases ripped from history and involving well-known historical figures whose identities are nevertheless hidden from you. Every one of these cases requires you to use your detective skills to identify and diagnose the mystery patient just like the doctors that attended them. In the process, you’ll learn fascinating insights into medicine: both the medicine that was practiced thousands of years ago and the medicine doctors practice today.

I came here from previously listening to the other audiobooks by Dr. Benaroch. I am pleased with the selection of stories as well as the approach to the mysteries. I was tickled pink when my guesses were right!

Historia
The 10 enlightening (and often humorous) lectures of Medieval Myths and Mysteries will show you how far from the “dark” times of legend these centuries were. Uncover the facts about the Knights Templar. Reveal the truth behind the tales of legendary creatures like the Questing Beast and the unicorn. Trace the events of the Black Death and the ways it altered the world in its wake, and much more. With Professor Armstrong, you will dig deep into the ways that later generations reshaped the narrative of the medieval years and perpetuated the myths.

I love Dr. Armstrong; she brings an infectious (HA!) enthusiasm to her audiobooks. Whether she is discussing the black plague or King Arthur, the knowledge and direction she follows keeps the listener captivated.
