Bad accent
Revisado: 04-14-25
The accent was, at times, unintelligible.
The story was good, but would have been better if I had understood what a 'biwda coutus' was from the beginning.

Historia
The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Another home run
Revisado: 03-01-25
Mitt Dinniman has elevated a fringe genre not just to mainstream but to blockbuster.
And Jeff Hayes has elevated the art of narration to a new level.
If you are reading this and are wondering whether or not to start the series - do it. You will not be disappointed.
It is difficult to overstate how extraordinarily entertaining this series is.

Tired tropes. Lazy writing.
Revisado: 01-24-25
Climate change catastrophe?
Really?
That is how the author tries to grab the readers attention and is the setup for what follows.
Just plain lazy writing.
Lacks imagination and originality.
"OH, there's bullets whining past...."
Tired. Old. Unoriginal. Unimaginative. Lazy.
Give this book a pass. Too many other *good* books out there to listen to.
Overall unlistenable.

Historia
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 11-28-24
The narration was almost monotone. It was impossible to hear the difference between the characters. The narrator *might* be good as part of an ensemble cast, but he cannot carry the book alone.
The story was good(ish). It was hard to follow because of the narration.
I won't be getting any of the subsequent books in the series.
The narration ruined the book. I can't believe the editor and publisher allowed it's release. They could have found an amateur that could have voiced this better.

Don't, Just Don't
Revisado: 07-24-24
I had to stop listening about ⅓ the way in.
Absolutely unbearable.
If someone set out to prove they had no concept of even the most basic of economic principles, this book would prove it.
And if that wasn't enough, the woke mind virus has thoroughly infected the author. Book One was bad enough. But he takes it to a new level here.
And Will Wheaten can read in an overly dramatic fashion. He can't do characters or act voices or accents, but at least he can follow the William Shatner school and just over dramatize it.

Getting stale
Revisado: 07-17-24
The story line is getting a bit stale. Ditching the Clavers was a bonus. But the McGill character seems to be stagnating. New galactic intrigue is a good addition. But this story felt almost like it had been 'phoned in.

A short story
Revisado: 02-27-24
The hyper self awareness coupled with the endless introspection and psychobabel ruin what would have been a good short story. Once you take out all the navel gazing this story would be reduced the the size of a pamphlet.

The 1st Formic Wars, really?
Revisado: 10-07-23
The narration is, as always, top notch. But I kept hearing the voices of Carlos, and Klaver, and Winslade, etc. It was distracting. Should have chosen a different narrator for the new series.
As to the story - for the first part of the book I kept waiting for Lem Jukes to make an appearance. And I kept thinking that all we needed now was to make the aliens ants. And viola!
The first formic wars trilogy by OSC was a true magnum opus. (The second was a dumpster fire from which there is no recovery- hence no 3rd book in the trilogy.) BV Larson is a fantastic author. One of my favorites. But when you make a story so similar to a triumph such as the 1st formic wars, the listener cannot help but make comparisons. While this book was very good, it does not rise to the level of Earth Unaware. Which is why I only gave it 4 stars. If Mr Larson reads this - I'm sorry. I really do enjoy your work. Perhaps if OSC had collaborated with you (and maybe Craig Alanson) he wouldn't have ruined the 2nd trilogy (and his career). Perhaps as this this series progresses you can show him how it's done.
I also would have preferred more character development. Seems as if the story was pared down to some arbitrary length for some reason and the depth of the characters was lost. While this book was good - it was not Swarm good.
