Great Audio, Poor Story
Revisado: 07-02-24
As someone who has read all of SJM's books as they were released, I was super excited for this one to come out. I loved House of Earth and Blood. It is one of my favorites of her books because I had such a fun time reading it. House of Sky and Breath was fine, I wasn't a huge fan of it because I felt like it was a little muddled. This one, I felt incredibly meh about. It was very mid in my opinion and had a lot of issues that should have been edited out.
My biggest issue with HOSAB was that I felt like Bryce was no longer the main character. SJM was much more invested in the POVs of her male characters in that book and Bryce only popped in every few chapters. The good thing about HOFAS was that I felt like that issue was resolved. She felt like a main character again. The problem I now had was that Bryce felt very out of character from what I loved so much about her in HOEAB. I found her to also be mid and a little annoying. I think this ends up being a critique of SJM's writing rather than Bryce's actual character because most of my issues were because of lazy writing.
My main issue with this book was that there were no real stakes at all. Any time the characters got into a bind, suddenly there was this magical solution that we had never heard of before, but magically fixes all the issues that the characters had. It was so annoying!!! In the penultimate fight scene where we think that Bryce is going to die, suddenly she is saved with literally the power of love. It was so stupid and made me so angry. Not that I wanted Bryce to die, but I would have appreciated some stakes because this fight was built up the entire book only for it to be very lackluster.
Other things I had issues with Lidia's sons just being thrown in there for no real reason. Again, lazy writing. The fact that the plot went in circles. The same things were happening over and over again. This book could have been 200 pages shorter easily. The fact that the end was all wrapped up with a neat and tidy little bow, but I know that SJM is going to try and undo all of that and write another book in this series.
And lastly, the thing people were so excited about was the ACOTAR crossover. Very anti-climactic. Nesta and Az were the only characters shown and neither one of them felt like themselves.
So what my review boils down to is SJM's writing was lazy, all the characters were OOC, and I was disappointed.

Not My Fav
Revisado: 07-02-24
I read this book because a friend is obsessed with it and makes everyone around her read it lol. It was a heartwrenching small-town, big-family romance. Think of a sadder version of the Bergman Brothers series.
While this wasn't my favorite book or reading experience, it has really good bones and I think I would be open to continuing the series because I think I will like the main characters in the second book more than I liked and related to the characters in Bend Toward the Sun.

This was my first Nikki Payne and I have to say, I don’t think it was for me. This stems more from the fact that I’m not a big Jane Austen fan as well so I think a lot of this book was lost on me. I don’t really have any familiarity with Sense and Sensibility which didn’t really help matters either. I think if Nikki Payne ever did a non-Jane Austen book, I would probably give it a try, but this one just wasn’t for me.
I was often bored and didn’t really care about any of the stakes. It felt over the top and yet convenient? I will say that Nikki writes some hot ass tension and sad scenes. The camping scene was jaw droppingly hot and I haven’t forgotten it.
I haven’t read Pride and Protest and now I’m not sure if I will. It does seem to have better reviews than this one so I guess we’ll see.

All children are told fairytales. Some are epic adventures with high stakes and exciting twists but others are tales of pitiful princesses trapped in boring towers pining for their Prince Charmings to come and rescue them. But one young woman always hated those stories. Why didn't they get up and rescue themselves? Little did she know that her own fate would take a similarly ironic turn. Because now, here she is. Stuck. In a tower. Turns out, when a dragon holds you hostage, he doesn't just let you get up and leave.

I am so sad that this charming series has come to a close. The Mead Mishaps books are some of the most fun that I have had the pleasure of reading as of late.
This one was fun, but ultimately I felt like it wasn't really that different from That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon. The two plots are very similar and I didn't feel like this one had something different to offer. Cherry was an icon and I really liked Dante though. I honestly think that Dante may be my favorite MMC from the series with Felix in a strong second place.
Here is my official ranking:
1. That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf
2. That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon
3. That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Human
I will say that this one has my favorite cover of the 3. Here's to hoping that Kimberly Lemming writes more unhinged shit.

European Summer Read

This was recommended to me by a friend who insisted that because I loved YOU MADE A FOOL OF DEATH WITH YOUR BEAUTY by Akwaeke Emezi, that I would love A PERFECT VINTAGE. And while I can see why she made that recommendation, it didn't end up working out like that.
A PERFECT VINTAGE has the same fun, summery vibes, but with none of the same depth. Everything about this book felt like a very "at face value" type of situation. None of the characters really stood out from each other. Especially THE MEN!!! I had no clue who any of them were supposed to be at any given time. They all felt like the same character.
Anyways this book had semi-okay vibes which is why it got three stars.

Revisado: 07-02-24
Corregidora is definitely a book where I felt like it was "all vibes no plot." I'm being dramatic and there is a plot, but a lot of the book was just sex, family drama, blues singing, and conversations about the men who have power over us with seemingly no plot or character development. It's for sure one of the more unique books I have had to read for class and I will always remember it (mostly because of the amount of "pussy" and "fuck" that were quoted from this book while talking about it in class).

Best Sarah Adams Book!
Revisado: 07-02-24
Sarah Adams has such a magic touch when it comes to writing the most adorable romcoms. They truly have me believing in love again.
Full transparency: I read the Cheat Sheet almost three years ago and HATED it so much that I thought maybe Sarah Adams just wasn't the author for me. Well, one of my close friends convinced me to read Practice Makes Perfect because she thought I would love it and I did! I then read When in Rome and loved it too! When this book was announced, I initially wasn't planning on reading it since I really didn't love The Cheat Sheet, but funnily enough, the same friend who had convinced me to read Practice Makes Perfect also convinced me to try this one. I am so glad she did because this just may have been my favorite Sarah Adams. I think I'll have to reread Practice Makes Perfect before I can decide which one is my top favorite from Sarah Adams.
The Rule Book was such a special read that truly felt like Sarah Adams had written it just for me. I related to Nora so much and I also thought she was just a fun FMC. She was quirky and silly but also knew how to stand up for herself.
I loved Derek and everything about him. New book boyfriend for sure. He and Nora are the definition of idiots in love. I love how he cared for Nora in the small ways. Like making sure he caught her when she would pass out from seeing blood... as well as trying to keep her from seeing said blood... that didn't always work.
This book is so cozy and comforting and I am obsessed. Sarah Adams fan for life.

Greenville County, South Carolina, is a wild, lush place that is home to the Boatwright family - a tight-knit clan of rough-hewn, hard- drinking men who shoot up each other's trucks, and indomitable women who get married young and age too quickly. At the heart of this story is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a bastard child who observes the world around her with a mercilessly keen perspective.

Southern Classic
Revisado: 07-02-24
I have really enjoyed most of what I have read for my southern lit class and this is no exception. This is such a strong book with incredibly hard-hitting conversations and topics. It's a book that is extremely accessible to most readers. Allison writes in a way that is easy to read on a surface level. It's not one of those books where what she is saying has a double meaning that you have to read between the lines to parse out the real meaning. That is part of what I really loved about this book, the fact that I could fully understand what was happening without having to squint to figure it out.
However, it is an incredibly difficult book because of the very serious themes it discusses. There are graphic depictions of abuse, assault, and rape. Some passages were incredibly difficult to get through and as a result, I would not recommend this book to everyone. But I am also incredibly grateful this book was on the syllabus for this semester.

Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Not My Fav Abby Jimenez
Revisado: 07-02-24
I have very complex thoughts and feelings about this book and considering that I finished reading it not even twenty minutes ago... I don't think they have fully sunk in or registered. Just a warning that this is not going to be a positive review. Even though I have adored Abby's previous books and even liked aspects of Just for the Summer, overall, this was not a book for me.
First off is the fact that I would argue that this book should fall more into (women's) fiction. This was not a romance. It is a book that happens to have a romance subplot. The majority of the book is not focused on the romance - we get a lot about the relationship between Justin and Emma, but even then it feels more like a partnership/friendship rather than a sweeping romance (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not what I was wanting or expecting). I didn't feel any chemistry or tension between Emma and Justin. It was just missing that special Abby Jimenez spark that the couples in her other books always seem to have.
The book is overwhelmingly about Emma's relationship with her mom. This is the plotline that seems to guide the whole book and yet somehow it felt half-baked?? Just for the Summer really suffers from "there's so much going on that nothing is fully formed." That's how I felt about Emma and Justin's relationship, the plot line with Emma's mother, Emma's friendship with Maddy, and the plotline with Justin's family. There was just so much going on that I couldn't really appreciate the book as a whole. I say all of this, and yet somehow I was also bored while reading?? There wasn't really anything capturing my attention.
The one thing that I did like was the plot line with Justin's family and how he took custody of all his siblings. It was interesting and seemed to have been done with care. It added some tender whimsy to the book. I loved Emma's relationship with both of his sisters. It melted my heart when they came to her with their issues.
Overall, I was incredibly let down by this. Part of Your World is one of the best romances I have read in recent years and I was really hoping for a repeat of that magic considering all the advanced praise I saw Just for the Summer getting. Honestly, this felt closer to a two-star rating for me, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it, so we got a reluctant three-star rating. I will continue to read Abby Jimenez, this one was just a miss for me.

Rosie Belmont has been driving me wild for years. The good kind of wild. The bad kind of wild. But mostly the kind of wild that comes with wanting your best friend’s little sister and knowing you can’t have her. After living in the city, she comes blasting back into Rose Hill like a storm. Beautiful, messy, and chaotic. And one wide-eyed desperate plea for a job is all it takes for me to hire her.

Wow... what a time... a new Elsie Silver book/series!!! I will say that I have seen a lot of people comparing this to cowboy romances and just so you are not disappointed... there is no cowboy to be seen in this book. This is a billionaire/employee romance that happens to be set in a small town.
I don't want to dog on this book because it is a fun read, but I did have a few issues and critiques for what could have made it a better book.
My main issue was the fact that there was no real conflict or investment value. It was the same thing back and forth. I also didn't feel the chemistry between Ford and Rosie. They had good sexual tension, but when it came to romantic love, I didn't believe it. There was a spark that was missing and I think it left the whole book feeling lackluster
It feels like a book that was just there. It didn't have any overarching plot or character development. A lot of elements felt hodgepodged together and it just didn't work for me.
I will probably continue with this series just because it is Elsie, but this book wasn't my favorite.
