Historia
After getting canned from the Seattle PD, brilliant, wisecracking Thomas Prescott follows his sister Lacy to Philadelphia, where she swims on the Drexel University team. While Thomas’s slapstick antics mask a keen analytic mind, it’s his nose for trouble that leads him again and again into dicey situations. The ex–homicide detective is not long in Philly before getting caught up in two high-powered criminal cases. Thomas stumbles into a crime scene amid the Occupy Philadelphia protests. Activist Brooke Wexley has been strangled within sight of city hall.

I caught myself laughing out loud a decent amount, and a pretty good mystery as well.

Historia
In 2012, Dr. Karen King, a star religion professor at Harvard, announced a breathtaking discovery just steps from the Vatican: she’d found an ancient scrap of papyrus in which Jesus calls Mary Magdalene “my wife”. The mysterious manuscript, which King provocatively titled “The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife”, had the power to topple the Roman Catholic Church. It threatened not just the all-male priesthood, but centuries of sacred teachings on marriage, sex, and women’s leadership, much of it premised on the hallowed tradition of a celibate Jesus.

Very, very good! I really enjoyed how the narrative played out, how the reporter discovered each person’s motivations, and ultimately the final chapters which sort of wrap up in a bit of a surprise… fascinating, infuriating

Cute mysteries- not really hard to figure out, but cute characters, nice scene setting, and a good 3-in-one value.

Historia
Mum passed recently. It was sudden and unexpected. On the cusp of adulthood, my twin sister, Skye, and I are left with decisions to make that will change our lives forever. As identical twins, we’d normally stick together like glue, but anger and grief gets the better of us and we push and pull in different directions. At an impasse, each of us stubbornly gets our wish. Finding myself alone and without the other half of me, I’m desperately lonely. I need a friend. But, when I find that special someone, I know I’ve made a terrible mistake and trusted the wrong person.

Historia
In the summer of 2022, Lee Berger lost 50 pounds in order to wriggle though impossibly small openings in the Rising Star cave complex in South Africa—spaces where his team has been unearthing the remains of Homo naledi, a proto-human likely to have coexisted with Homo sapiens some 250,000 years ago. Lead researcher Berger had never made his way into the dark, cramped, dangerous underground spaces where many of the naledi fossils had been found. Now he was ready to do so. Once inside the cave, Berger made shocking new discoveries that expand our understanding of this early hominid.

Fine story, just a bit hard to get into
Revisado: 05-30-23
This was a fine, cozy mystery, but it was a little hard to get into. For some reason that I can’t put my finger on, the characters just didn’t engage me and the mystery moved a little slow,

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Interesting Memoir
Revisado: 05-19-23
Interesting memoir, though I preferred the first part to to second. Some reviewers objected to the language, but reading about his antics and the trouble he got in, the f-word seemed appropriate for his inner monologue. Some of his comments are deadpan, not necessarily an endorsement of a particular action or feeling about an action. Overall, I think it was a heartwarming memoir and an obvious ode to his incredible mother, and to the community and yes, the country, that helped shape him. HOWEVER- if you do not want to hear about animal cruelty, skip chapter 7 entirely. I didn’t find it added anything to the story, and it was just shitty. If you do not want to hear about domestic violence, the last chapter especially may have moments of difficulty to listen to, but you would miss a lot skipping that chapter.

Started slow, got better
Revisado: 02-22-23
The first book was extremely descriptive and a bit slow, but the books picked up steam as they went along. If you like antiques, you might really like these books. If you are ambivalent, you may learn a little something that piques your interest in them. The narrator was a bit slow, but that seemed to fit the genre somehow.
