I wish I'd had the willpower to "sip" the book (so I could "live" in the book for longer than two days), but I couldn't help myself. I binge-listened the final half of the book.

The good:

-- The story kept me guessing. I usually guess the "who dun it," but this one took me by surprise.

-- I enjoyed the "realness" of the characters--the main characters, of course, but there was also a Pakistani caretaker whom I secretly adored. (I have a pet peeve against people who do sloppy paint jobs, so I could really relate to the caretaker's outrage... I won't say any more 'cuz I don't want to spoil anything.)

The medium:

-- The book is written in present tense. I don't usually like present tense, but it did add to the sense of immediacy, and I soon got used to it.

-- The narration was a little flat in tone and timber, but after listening for a while, I decided that the narration was perfect. The delivery added to the "Nordic Noir" mood.

The bad:

-- The names were a little hard to keep track of. I'm not familiar with Scandinavian names, so I made myself a list of characters (as I was listening to the first 15 or 20 minutes of the book) so that I could keep track of who was who. I really wish the publishers had provided a "character" list as a PDF accompaniment.

-- The book ended. ;-) I hope there is a sequel.

If you like Nordic Noir and good mysteries, I fully recommend the book.

The author uses fresh (and highly amusing) descriptions. I especially liked peaking behind the curtains at the REAL goings-on at the Oscars. I will listen to the book again in the future.

This is one of my favorite Lisa Gardner books because (1) The gore was minimal, and (2) the plot turned and twisted several times -- I thought I'd figured it out, half way through the book, but I kept reading because I liked the characters... and then I was surprised. I really enjoy mysteries that keep their secrets until the end. Great narration too.

I loved the writing -- vivid and colorful with bright bursts of hilarious comments and asides. And I couldn't imagine anyone else performing the book; Jessi Klein is a gifted reader with clear enunciation and superlative comedic timing.

IMO, Miss Jessi Klein truly is female equivalent of Groucho Marx, but with deeper dimension and a slice of witty self-deprecation that Groucho lacked (although maybe I just never noticed -- I was younger and even stupidier, if that's a word, when I last saw Duck Soup, etc.).

I hope Jessi writes another book. I will stand in line through hail, storm and Martian invasions to buy the book.

After listening to C.B. McKenzie's first book, Bad Country, I was keeping an eye out for his next book. So when I saw Burn What Will Burn, I snapped it up.

I thought Burn What Will Burn was going to be mystery/thriller, but no -- it was more of a slightly-noire novel, and that's a good thing because mystery/thriller books tend to be formulaic, and BWWB was anything but formulaic.

Pros -- great prose, richly-construed characters, not predictable, excellent narration.
Cons -- I could have listened to a couple more hours of the book, but hey, when a story ends, it's over. ;-)

I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with the characters in this book, and if I could wave a magic wand, there would be a fourth book in the series so that Holly could continue to evolve. (Hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.) ;-)

By the way, WIll Patton is a GREAT narrator, and I really, REALLY enjoyed his interpretation and voice for Holly.

I tried the book on a lark (ha, ha, pun intended -- read the book and you'll see why), and I am very glad I did. I enjoy thrillers. I also enjoy humorous books. Books and movies that combine both are irresistible.

The plot had twists and turns, the characters were compelling (no cardboard cut-outs here), and the narration was perfect.

I am eagerly awaiting the second book in the series!
