Historia
Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to coexist peacefully as equals, without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. But the peace has also made humanity complacent.

Different than 3 Body Problem but equally great
Revisado: 07-19-24
While this book and Dark Forest are radically different from 3 Body Problem, the whole series was a great read with mind blowing concepts and imagery. I am disappointed it’s finished! Narrator was excellent as well.

Loved it

Fantastic storytelling and imagery. The first chapter was hard to understand without historical references so just hang in there because it gets good very quickly. Narration adds a lot and great translation! The print book is a good companion for the footnotes.

Historia
The day Fatima forgot her name, Death paid a visit. From hereon in she would be known as Sankofa - a name that meant nothing to anyone but her, the only tie to her family and her past. Her touch is death, and with a glance a town can fall. And she walks - alone, except for her fox companion - searching for the object that came from the sky and gave itself to her when the meteors fell and when she was yet unchanged; searching for answers.

One of my Nnedi faves!
Revisado: 10-19-23
I have listened to almost all of Nnedi’s books and I love this one as much as my other favorites (Binti and Who Fears Death). Because this book is shorter, the character portrayal is very tight almost like in a short story. We get to focus on the main character and her inner world as well as the changes she creates around her. Loved the narrator as well, whose accents and ways of speaking transported me to another continent!

Historia
In both history and fiction, some of the most dramatic, notorious deaths have been through poisonings. Concealed and deliberate, it's a crime that requires advance planning and that for many centuries could go virtually undetected. And yet there is a fine line between healing and killing: The difference lies only in the dosage!

Great book, narration needs editing
Revisado: 08-17-23
Really enjoyed the storytelling of this book and bought the print version. The narration would benefit from editing as there are many words that are mispronounced.

Historia
Conjure Women is a sweeping story that brings the world of the South before and after the Civil War vividly to life. Spanning eras and generations, it tells of the lives of three unforgettable women: Miss May Belle, a wise healing woman; her precocious and observant daughter, Rue, who is reluctant to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a midwife; and their master’s daughter, Varina. The secrets and bonds among these women and their community come to a head at the beginning of a war and at the birth of an accursed child.

I truly enjoyed this book. It was very well written yet the narrative was complex and rich. The characters were multifaceted and carried a story of both strength and suffering.

Historia
This is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly unhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: She is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wanted - and still wants - to destroy her and those she cares for and how she can save herself.

Not my fave but still a worthwhile read
Revisado: 01-18-23
This is so far my least favorite Octavia Butler novel, but it is still good, thought provoking and worth a read, especially if you are a Butler fan. The opening is unforgettable and there are a few parts that made a deep impression on me. Like her books tend to do.
Regarding another reviewer’s disgust at what appears to be a sexual encounter with a child and older man, all I can say is that person stopped reading too soon. I believe are supposed to be challenged by the sexual nature of the characters but — this is a vampire story AND the main character is not exactly what she first seems.
As usual Butler reveals overarching social structures we may take for a given — by scrambling or discarding them.

Historia
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

Historia
The Moon will soon return. Whether this heralds the destruction of humankind or something worse will depend on two women. Essun has inherited the power of Alabaster Tenring. With it, she hopes to find her daughter Nassun and forge a world in which every orogene child can grow up safe. For Nassun, her mother's mastery of the Obelisk Gate comes too late. She has seen the evil of the world, and accepted what her mother will not admit: That sometimes what is corrupt cannot be cleansed, only destroyed.

Fantastic, fantastical world
Revisado: 12-22-22
Like the other books in this series, this story was at times hard to follow and requires focus or rereading to stay oriented. But well worth the effort. There are some nods to Octavia Butler, I believe, but a wholly original world of geological time and material. Loved it. Great performance as always by Robin Miles!
