Historia
Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summer crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday. They are, in fact, birthday twins. A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life.

Started slow, but by the end was very good
Revisado: 09-06-23
This book started very slow. We were ready to turn it off, but we listened a little longer and things picked up and then went at a good pace until the end. Not the sort of book I would normally listen to. Me, my wife, and 23 year old son were on a trip for 7 hours. By the time we got to our destination all 3 of us couldn’t wait to listen to the rest of the book on our return drive home in a few days. I would recommend this book even if it’s not a persons normal genre.

It is 1810, and in Napoleon's determination to conquer Portugal, and push the British back to the sea, he sends his largest army yet across the Spanish frontier. But between the Portuguese border and Napoleon's seemingly certain victory are two obstacles; a wasted land, stripped of food by Wellington's orders, and Captain Richard Sharpe.

I love these books
Revisado: 05-24-23
The narrator was different than the other Sharpe’s books I have listened to. I didn’t listen like him at first , but he grew on me. This book was longer than other books of this series, but I enjoyed it a lot. Cornwell is my favorite author!

Historia
Here is one of those rare novels, the first in an epic series, that completely transports the listener to an unforgettable time and place in history. At Talavera in July of 1809, Captain Richard Sharpe, bold, professional, and ruthless, prepares to lead his men against the armies of Napoleon into what will be the bloodiest battle of the war.

Almost quit on this book
Revisado: 02-19-20
The beginning of this book is a way too long chapter on what happened in the first book. I’ve listened to the first book already. The 2nd chapter was almost as bad. But, finally the book gets going in the third chapter and then I really enjoyed it. Right up until the ending. I did not like how this book ended. It gives me pause whether to get the next book in the series or not. The narrator of his book is very good, however and I enjoyed him a lot.

While the major fighting of the war moves to the south in the summer of 1779, a British force of fewer than a thousand Scottish infantry, backed by three sloops-of-war, sails to the desolate and fog-bound coast of New England. Establishing a garrison and naval base at Penobscot Bay, in the eastern province of Massachusetts that would become Maine, the Scots - the only British troops between Canada and New York - harry rebel privateers and give shelter to American loyalists....

I just couldn’t do it.
Revisado: 02-06-20
Bernard Cornwell is one of my favorite authors. I usually love his books. This book however was so hard to listen to I just couldn’t do it. I tried 3 times to listen to it, twice listening for at least 30 minutes. It just was drudgery. I finally looked at reviews of the book on here and I saw that many people had the same opinion that I had. I definitely have and will purchase more Cornwell books. My advice is to just pass on this book. Even great authors aren’t perfect.

Great book, should be a movie.
Revisado: 09-28-19
I know this book was made into a movie, but it was an animated movie. This book is the beginning of the Dragonlance world and novels. I have played D&D, and played these modules that were from this book. This book has everything a great story needs. A half elf leader, a gruff dwarf, a skinny mage in bad health but very powerful, his brother a huge warrior that only thinks of looking after his brother, a barbarian and his lifelong friend and love interest a female human who becomes a full fledged Priestess of Mishakal and becomes one of the most powerful people in the party. Throw in Dragons, draconians of different kinds, definitive villains and you have a great story. Oh yea, I forgot about a Solamnic knight. Great writing and great story telling in this book, also some humor with Tasslehoff Burfoot the kinder up to all of his antics. All in all a great book and a must for anyone into the fantasy genre.

Fun little story

This was a fun little story from the view of Babe Ruth himself. I don't know the history, but if this is true it is very interesting. I enjoyed this quick story about a larger than life great historical figure in American society.

A very slow beginning
Revisado: 10-22-18
The book was very slow to start. Not a normal book I would get but I like to listen to audiobooks when I travel and my wife doesn’t like my normal genre so we tried this book. To be truthful we both were ready to quit on this book after listening for 1 hour, but because we were in heavy traffic around Chicago I couldn’t download another book at the time. By the time we finally got through the traffic (35 minutes) the book picked up. The rest of the book held our attention the rest of the way. The book does get bogged down sometimes by getting way to descriptive about things that doesn’t matter. If you can still with it, the book does become a good thriller.

Which character – as performed by John Lee – was your favorite?
Ellen
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Any additional comments?
I had listened to this book on cassette tape probably 20 years ago. I had forgotten a lot of it. I just remembered i liked it a lot. Boy was I right, love the characters, the time period of the story, and especially the good guys and the villains. I especially liked the beginning when Follett talks about how he came to write this book. Great book and have already started listening to the next in the series.

Good story
Revisado: 03-21-17
I liked this book. The thing I didn't like was the narrator would talk so low sometimes it was hard to hear. I then would have the volume way up and I would get blasted out my car when it would be very loud. I spent a lot of time changing the volume during this book.
