Historia
In this riveting landmark autobiography, which reads like a novel, Academy Award and Emmy winner Louis Gossett, Jr., masterfully transports us to 1840s New York; Washington, D.C.; and Louisiana to experience the kidnapping and 12 years of bondage of Solomon Northup, a free man of color. Twelve Years a Slave, published in 1853, was an immediate bombshell in the national debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War.

Enlightening Story
Revisado: 08-19-24
As an American history buff, I’ve read a great deal about the civil war and related the periods before and after the war. Nothing has opened my eyes to life of a slave like this book. To say it was a terrible period in the American story is an extreme understatement.

Interesting Story
Revisado: 06-28-24
We listened to Westport on a road trip. The story was interesting and kept us guessing about who done it? The depiction of the hedge fund culture was accurate and made the storyline come to life. Comey’s experience in federal law enforcement came through clearly. I look forward to reading another of his books.

Historia
Legendary bush pilot Josie Jonson can’t believe her luck when a skilled builder just happens to show up after she purchases land near Prentiss Pond. All Mark Redmond asks in return for building Josie’s dream cabin is that he be left alone to homeschool his 12-year-old daughter, Cady. For Maine game warden investigator Mike Bowditch, the intensity of Redmond's secretiveness is troubling, especially in light of suspicious criminal activity being reported around the area―including rumors of an armed man offering large sums of money in exchange for the location of Redmond and Cady.

I have read or listened to every book in the Mike Bowditch series. This book was by far the worst. Story was depressing and lacked character development.

Historia
Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches—but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined.

Half good Half bad
Revisado: 02-15-24
The first half of the book was boring. It could have been much more concise. The second half of the book was interesting and provided great insight on the role of religious freedom in the formation of the USA. Overall it’s worth listening to another of the Killing Series.

And it is here that Bell Elkins - prosecutor turned private investigator - makes a grim discovery while searching for a missing teenager: A dead body, marred by a ghastly wound that can only mean murder.

I have listened to a number of the books in this series. Bell Elkins has run her course. Every major event in the book was completely predictable. No more Bell, Nick and Jake for me!

Historia
Beginning with “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” and ending with “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit,” Meacham captures for the listener how these words epitomize Jesus’s message of love, not hate; grace, not rage; and, rather than vengeance, extraordinary mercy. For each saying, Meacham composes an essay on the origins of Christianity and how Jesus’s final words created a foundation for oral and written traditions that upended the very order of the world.

The long-awaited new legal thriller from John Grisham is here. In The Summons, law professor Ray Atlee and his black-sheep brother are called home by their ailing father, the Judge, for a family meeting that never takes place. The Judge dies too soon, and in doing so leaves behind a shocking secret known only to Ray. And perhaps someone else.

Least of Reacher
Revisado: 09-19-22
This has been my least favorite of the 15 Reacher series books I have either read or listened to on Audible. The story was good but the painstaking details made it hard to listen. The new narrator is not my favorite voice of Reacher.
