What a great book. It takes it’s time, it meanders, it moves slow but it sinks into you. Wonderfully read by the author.

Lovely novel
Revisado: 08-31-24
Lovely novel, superb writing and superb performance. It’s difficult to classify it. Historical fiction, romance, high art literature, an attempt for a biography?

This extraordinary book is the result of Saul Bellow’s sojourn in Israel in 1975. A personal record of his stay—his experiences and impressions—as well as a meditation, it crackles with wit and controversy on America’s relationship with this embattled country.

Saul Bellow’s observation on a young state
Revisado: 03-02-24
It is quite amazing how contemporary this book sounds today given that it was written 50 years ago. It also comes to day how little progress was make to advance the peace process in the Middle East.
Highly recommended to anyone interested in Israel.

Historia
Stalin’s Scribe is the first biography of a man who was once one of the Soviet Union’s most prominent political figures. Thanks to the opening of Russia’s archives, Brian Boeck discovers that Sholokhov’s official Soviet biography is actually a tangled web of legends, half-truths, and contradictions. Boeck examines the complex connection between an author and a dictator, revealing how a Stalinist courtier became an ideological acrobat and consummate politician in order to stay in favor and remain relevant after the dictator’s death.

Historia
From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

New authoritarian regimes under the microscope
Revisado: 09-05-20
I have been waiting for this book for years and years and now that I went through it, he ing is incredible. It is one of those cases when you find an author that can tell the story you have inside of you so eloquently and so intelligently, that you are bound to feel grateful.
And despite the gloomy title, this book is filled with hope, the hope that once we can understand authoritarianism we can deal with it.
