Dr. Hahn always makes very complicated concepts understandable. In this case, he ties the teaching of the church to the love most of us find in family.

Historia
For a modern culture that does not highly value life, it is paradoxical that we don't want to talk about the dying process or the possibility of an afterlife. Catholics sometime suffer from the same hesitation about talking about death. Yet the Roman Catholic religion and culture are a constant preparation for that moment when we must trust Jesus for our salvation. All the rituals and sacraments, prepare our minds and hearts for that thing from which there is no escape.

Short , but good
Revisado: 04-07-15
As a devout Catholic and a Hospice and Palliative Care physician, I think this book would be helpful to anyone who as a family member who is dying. it reminds us of the why of our rich Catholic heritage. The only two criticism I would have is the reader reads a little too slow. Also, it is perhaps a little too optimistic about few people going to hell. After all, our Lady in Fatima reminds us the people are falling like leaves from a tree.

Historia
Of all things Catholic, there is nothing that is so familiar as the Mass. With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most Catholics sitting in the pews on Sundays fail to see the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as "Heaven on Earth," explaining that what "we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy."

Historia
Elected to the papacy at the age of 76, Pope John XXIII was to have a brief but important reign. Although he had a doctorate in theology, his gifts were pastoral, reaching out to the people of the Church. Vatican II, which he convened, brought forth the idea of a church as a community, in which all God's people are a sign of redemption for the human race. Cahill, in his short biography, gives us a sense of the enduring importance of John XXIII's idea.

Revisado: 09-26-14
I originally got this book thinking a would get a nice biography of St. John XXII. However, almost from the very begin Dr. Cahill goes into a diatribe about the Catholic Church from Peter to John XXII. I believe that the title of a book should actually tell you what is on its pages.

Historia
In the year 1917, in a mountainous region at the center of Portugal, the Mother of God appeared six times to three young children. Elsewhere on the continent the “Great War” raged, that would cost Europe an entire generation, over 37 million lives. Besides sending her own sons to die (in France and North Africa) Portugal was in political chaos at home. There was a dizzy succession of governments following a revolution in 1910.

Historia
When he was elected pope in the fall of 1978, few people had ever heard of the charismatic Karol Wojty³a. But in a very short time he would ignite a revolution of conscience in his native Poland that would ultimately lead to the collapse of European communism and death of the Soviet Union. What even fewer people knew was that the KGB, the Polish Secret Police, and the East German Stasi had been waging a dangerous, decades-long war against Wojty³a and the Vatican itself.

More about politics than about religion
Revisado: 09-10-13
John Paul II was an amazing man in more ways than one. He had a great effect on the worlds of Religion and Politics. I bought this book expecting to hear about the religious side, but instead It told the story of how he contributed to the end of the "Cold War" and the USSR.

As the leader of the Catholic Church, the oldest continuing institution in the Western world, Pope John Paul II was a giant in every sphere he touched: personal, theological, political, ecumenical. In an age rich with heroes, Pope John Paul II was truly the great man of the past century, a man who personally confronted its tragedies, from Nazism to communism.

A story of the author's life
Revisado: 11-01-12
In this story, Ms. Noonan relates to us her life as a Catholic and how Pope John Paul the second affected her life. She does have some facts about the Pope's life and teachings, but to a large extent most of this book is a catharsis for her to tell us about the effects that the Pope had on her life. Also, there are some minor editing errors such as errors such as when she referred to 1 Corinthians chapter 13, she stated verse 13. Also when she sided the Beatitudes, she also added the commandments into there ( as well as other teachings.) Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it is hardly a theological treatise. Perhaps it was not intended to be.

Historia
Fr. Robert Barron's comprehensive work goes straight to the core of the Catholic faith. He first examines the foundations of Christ's incarnation, life and ministry, and then works through the essentials of the Catholic tradition: from sacraments, worship and prayer, to Mary and the saints, and on to salvation, heaven and hell. Throughout this epic journey, Fr. Barron uses art, literature, personal stories, Scripture, theology, philosophy and history to present a complete picture of the Church to the world.

Wide as a lake, but only an inch deep
Revisado: 07-09-12
Fr. Barron does a phenomenal job here, as he dose with the TV series. The Catholic Religion is something you can study for a life time and still not know all of it. Fr. Barron does a great job of covering a wide variety of topics, but due to the amount of space he has can only go so deep into each topic. For example, when he speaks of the saints, There are hundreds or maybe thousands of recognized saints, but he only has time for a brief biography of four saints: Sts Edith Stein, Therese of Lisieux,Katharine Drexel, and Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. I recommend this for anyone who is not Catholic and wants to learn more about the faith or is Catholic and wants to dig deeper.
