Historia
The Gingerbreadman, psychopath, sadist, genius, and killer, is on the loose. But it isn't Jack Spratt's case. He and Mary Mary have been demoted to Missing Persons following Jack's poor judgment involving the poisoning of Mr. Bun the baker. Missing Persons looks like a boring assignment until a chance encounter leads them into the hunt for missing journalist Henrietta "Goldy" Hatchett, star reporter for The Daily Mole.

Brilliantly Bonkers

I liked everything about this book. I liked it even better than 'The Big Over Easy'. The performance was engaging and the voices of the characters distinct. The writing was top notch (as we've come to expect from Jasper Fforde). Love, love, love.

Historia
'Relics of General Chassé' is a humorous tale of a corpulent and somewhat dandified clergyman who, while visiting the castle at Antwerp, inadvertently becomes separated from his breeches. What follows shakes him to the core. The breeches fall into the hands of a group of female English tourists who decide to take some sample of the cloth as a souvenir.

Fantastic Story, Terrible Naration
Revisado: 06-17-24
This short story was sooo good. As one would expect with Trollope, the characters were engaging and not above pricking the pomposity of the good.
The narrator was awful. It almost sounded like they were attempting to read prose as poetry. With weirdly long drawn out words and lilts that sounded like the text was full of exclamation points. I don't know what was so exciting about the hairbrush "bristles!", but the narrator sure wanted to get that across. It completely took me out of the story. There were times where it evened out a little and wasn't bad but then it was like they remembered what they were doing and slid back into that weird cadence. I wish Audible offered this story read by a different narrator because it's so funny, but I almost couldn't finish it.

Just Brilliant
Revisado: 06-08-24
The review prompt asks what you like. Everything. Absolutely every in this book is amazing. The writing (as always) is fantastic, the story is clever and entertaining. The reader is fun to listen to. There were a couple of technical glitches where a sentence or two was repeated but it wasn't often enough to disrupt my enjoyment.
I laughed out loud several times.
Highly recommended.

Historia
Feisty, passionate Beatrice Steele has never fit the definition of a true lady, according to the strict code of conduct that reigns in Swampshire, her small English township—she is terrible at needlework, has absolutely no musical ability, and her artwork is so bad it frightens people. Nevertheless, she lives a perfectly agreeable life with her marriage-scheming mother, prankster father, and two younger sisters— beautiful Louisa and forgettable Mary. But she harbors a dark secret: She is obsessed with the true crime cases she reads about in the newspaper.

Bonkers In the Best Way
Revisado: 05-24-24
I was not expecting this. I love cozies and mysteries and all the things. I also love Douglas Adams, Jasper Fforde, and Drew Hays. This is everything.
With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the author takes you on a wild ride. Cheeky little asides and an absolutely straight-faced world of the bizarre leave you wondering what just happened.
Unlike many other cozies, the solution is not as simple anyone thinks.
Some of the characters' dialogue is a little...annoying...but once you realize that that is on purpose, it's much more enjoyable.
I can't wait for the next book from this author.

The World's Greatest Book Series
Revisado: 05-11-24
Another brilliant edition of 5-minute Sherlock. This series is constantly endearing, always entertaining, and in all other ways top-notch.
The writing is engaging and hilarious. I am a fan of cheeky dry humor, and this is a great example of the kind. There are a few incorrect words used (for example "indignity" is used when the author meant "indignation"), but these are so minor I think few would notice. I can't be mad at anything.
The performance is dry (in the best way!) but warm and inviting. I had to make myself stop listening so I could make the book last a few days. I didn't want to stop.
The story (as always) is a lot of fun. I cannot WAIT for the next installment (even if it goes on sale three days after I buy it. Audible. 😑).
I am returning to book 1 just so I can keep listening.
So. Worth. It.

The worst
Revisado: 05-08-24
I know you're not supposed to give spoilers so I won't but I wish I could get my $3 back. I wouldn't waste the time. Unfortunately, I didn't know how bad it was until the end so I had to listen to too much of it to be eligible to return. Didn't know how terrible it was until the last 20 minutes or so. It was riveting, if infuriating, until it took a turn to the absolutely awful. The language used was completely unnecessary but the story was very interesting and then...
Horrifying, spiritistic claptrap. It didn't even make sense.
Also, you know who the rapist is as soon as he's introduced. Immediately. Seriously. I thought the twist everyone was talking about was that it wasn't who you thought it was. That wasn't it.
The writing was okay until the end. If not for some foreshadowing, it would have felt completely insane. It was so unnecessary and gross.
Hated. It.

I couldn't stop listening
Revisado: 03-16-24
I really loved this book. I couldn't stop listening. The performance was brilliant and the writing musical. There were a few jarring moments in the prose and I really could have done without the graphic sex, but I just skipped past that, it was such a small part of the book.
Overall I loved it. I literally had to make myself stop listening so I could go to bed.

Meh It's Not Bad
Revisado: 06-15-23
The writing was decent, the performance excellent.
I appreciated the author acknowledging the inaccuracies in the author's note (besides historical ones, Lizzie was too young and Lydia too old).
I would probably have really liked this if the author had written original characters instead of hijacking and bastardizing a classic. It felt gimmicky and plot-puppety and she tried too hard to fit in lines from 'Pride and Prejudice' in a new context.
It wasn't terrible taken as separate story (imagining these were original characters). But as a 'reimagining', it fell short. One thing I will say in this book's favor is that as much as I love the story of 'Pride and Prejudice', Jane Austen is a terrible writer. 'Pride and Premeditation' is an okay story (rendered only okay due to previously stated shortcomings), but it is mostly written well so she does have a leg up on Austen there.

Didn't Even Finish
Revisado: 02-09-23
This had so much potential. I adore The a thin Man series and even the Thrilling Adventure Hour's take on Nick and Nora was charming and witty. I really tried to like this but the author seemed more interested in making a political point than telling a good story. So much verbiage was taken up with identifying how people identify, little thought seemed to go into their actual characters as people. The main character was vaguely interesting at times and maybe if I'd been able to finish it it would have gotten better but I was so disappointed in the lack of charm and wit I couldn't do it. Wish I could return it. Oh well.
