Historia
Forty thousand years ago, humanity fled a dying Earth. Traveling in massive arkships, these brave pioneers spread out across the galaxy to find a new home. After traveling thousands of light-years, one fleet of arkships arrived at Centauri, a dense cluster of stars with a vast array of potentially habitable planets. The survivors of Earth signaled to the remaining arkships that humanity had finally found its new home among the stars.

Hamilton came out of left field and just lapped Reynolds and is rivaling Banks. this book goes hard in every way it could have gone and keeps producing surprises every chapter.

Revisado: 12-19-21
9 books and it seems highly likely that they had a plan from the get go, execution = incredible. remember how 2001 was an amazing book and described the monolith? there's a lot of other novels that cover big ideas that don't fit into human understanding very well. this is THE BEST executing into a difficult post human topic I've ever seen. read more than 400 sci-fi titles in my life, this book needs awards

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

surprisingly good
Revisado: 12-04-21
amazing premise, typical Andy weir style. however, a lot more thought went into this novel then The Martian, it is obvious. All in all, I would consider this a big idea book, which is somewhat rare in science fiction. books with premise. this solid don't come around all of the time, there could be a little bit more work with Andy's delivery. however, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel

The Ness sisters ran away from home to become the most fearsome pirates in the 20,000 worlds of the Congregation. They've plundered treasures untold, taken command of their own ship, and made plenty of enemies. But now they're being hunted for crimes they didn't commit by a fleet whose crimes are worse than their own. To stay one step ahead of their pursuers and answer the questions that have plagued them, they'll have to employ every dirty, piratical trick in the book....

it finally all comes together for the crew. much of what we all wanted to get more information from - we got!
there's even more questions now, but choosing the t loop on many of these intellectual threads worked out great.
book was riveting and the best written of the three so far.

deep time with a twist
Revisado: 07-21-17
so you like stories that run 6 million years, involve clones, relativistic travel, futuristic weapons, civilizations of all kinds, and a mystery run in through it? Well then you are in luck - easily the most satisfying deep time novel I've ever read.
of all of Reynolds this book may be his best, even if it's not as well known as his other series.

Historia
On a remote, icy planet, the soldier known as Breq is drawing closer to completing her quest. Breq is both more than she seems and less than she was. Years ago, she was the Justice of Toren - a colossal starship with an artificial intelligence linking thousands of corpse soldiers in the service of the Radch, the empire that conquered the galaxy. An act of treachery has ripped it all away, leaving her with only one fragile human body.

dunno what others said but listen to this. it is not a good choice for a sci-fi newbie. but the story is really good and there are reasons it won every award in the industry worth getting at once as a debut for the author.
I think I'm up to about 3.5 months of listen time on audible and all of it sci-fi. much of it I was nonplused, much of it I was transported. this book will rank in the later.

Historia
The Argus Space Station looks down on a nightmarish Earth. And from this safe distance, the Committee enforces its despotic rule. There are too many people and too few resources, and they need 12 billion to die before Earth can be stabilised. So corruption is rife, people starve, and the poor are policed by mechanised overseers and identity-reader guns. Citizens already fear the brutal Inspectorate with its pain inducers. But to reach its goals, the Committee will unleash satellite laser weaponry, taking carnage to a new level. This is the world Alan Saul wakes to.

a bit bloated but started very strong
Revisado: 05-20-16
Asher starts off very well, indeed he went up in my estimation because of those first 100 pages. Asher's typical smash it up comes on strong in the latter half but this book could have been a bit shorter. i have read nearly everything he's written and he gets better with practice, in general his books have increased in skill over the years. however I will always prefer the Banks, Reynolds and Hamiltons more. that does not mean I dislike Asher, but there is something about his earlier sci-fi that turned me off. still I've read everything and he does a good job of bringing the story into interesting places. this book represents a new style for him. another reader commented that this was more like Richard Morgan. i agree, for those first 150 pages, afterwards the monsterama tries to kick in but without any alien creatures or dangerous million years old nano tech to do it with bee is left with robots... very cool and deadly sounding robots mind you.
all in all this book delivered a good yarn and I'll read the other two.

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

This is an excellend Sci-Fi novel
Revisado: 12-22-11
Would you consider the audio edition of Pandora's Star to be better than the print version?
In most cases I believe the audio format is better than printed, as the performer is able to add inflection and change his tone or pitch for different characters. This performer is no different.
While the reading doesn't sound as professional as many Audio books do, the performance is unique. The reader is able to give the listener the impression that the Characters voice is raised without actually yelling into the mic. I haven't found that happening in many of these audio book readings before.
Overall the Story line is superb and the recording is excellent. I highly recommend.
Only con: The story and it's tracks could be broken up more. I haven't lost my place yet, but doing it 3.6 hours into an 8 hour track would really stink to try and find my place.
What about John Lee’s performance did you like?
His voice and impressions.
