Retired police officer Adam Hennessey, hoping for a peaceful life running his traditional Somerset country pub, finds himself drawn into the unfolding drama in the hotel across the road.

Charming, But That Solution! . . .
Revisado: 01-09-23
Overall, pleasant and enjoyable. The primary characters are clearly defined and believable. The dialogue is natural and the story and characters well-portrayed by narrator Charlotte Stevens.
Everything plods along just fine until the big reveal. I found the solution to be unpredictable, primarily because too much information has been withheld from the reader. Adam, the retired cop/investigator, has visited characters and performed investigations about which we are not told. The climactic gathering of the suspects in the library (okay, it's a "lounge") is contrived, unnatural, and clichéd.
The pleasant denouement scenes add warmth, but don't redeem the disappointing conclusion to what was an otherwise enjoyable read.

Historia
First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially. One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

Hugh Grant Is Good, but Not Great
Revisado: 01-01-23
Only a Scrooge would not give the story five stars, but this version gets an overall four.
All of us adore Hugh Grant, of course, but his reading here is merely charming and efficient, rather than bold and dramatic. It's enjoyable, but I believe most listeners will get more pleasure out of readers Tim Curry or Patrick Stewart, who offer richer tone and more flair to the characters they portray in their respective versions. Hugh Grant does take the prize for a drier delivery of the subtle humor with which Dickens has infused this wonderful work.

Historia
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

More Scholarly than Entertaining
Revisado: 01-01-23
I do NOT mean to criticize scholarly writing here. This book is thoroughly researched and covers its topic broadly and fairly deeply. Nevertheless, I confess to having purchased it in search of something that would somehow better reflect the warmth and charm of its subject. Like many of the works of Dickens, who was paid by the word, this work could have been twenty percent shorter and gotten to its point more quickly.
The narrator is very professional (despite the occasional mispronunciation). Perhaps a British narrator might have felt more appropriate for the subject, but i can hardly fault this gentleman for that. I WAS distracted by the obvious changes in audio quality for the many segments where he was obviously called back to the studio (perhaps a different studio?) to re-read portions that must have contained errors.
Despite these gripes, I appreciate the context this author has provided to Dickens' beloved tale, and I'm pleased to understand more about the life, times, and circumstances of Charles Dickens before, during, and after his creation of "A Christmas Carol".

Historia
Before there was "tourism" and souvenir ashtrays became "kitsch", the Lake of the Ozarks was a Shangri-La for middle-class Midwestern families on vacation, complete with man-made beaches, Hillbilly Mini Golf, and feathered rubber tomahawks. It was there that author Bill Geist spent summers in the '60s during his school and college years working at Arrowhead Lodge - a small resort owned by his bombastic uncle - in all areas of the operation, from cesspool attendant to bellhop.

I remember Arrowhead Lodge…
Revisado: 12-31-22
And, while I certainly didn’t know it the way the author did, that lends credence and sentimentality to the enjoyment of reading these tales. Knowing the Ozarks in general will help the reader enjoy this, but I would think anybody would laugh and empathize as they hear these amusing and frequently touching tales of real-life people in a slightly off-kilter world.
Author Bill Geist reads the opening and closing sections with charm and an abundance of personality. The narrator who covers the middle section is serviceable, but lacks the warmth and authenticity of the author telling his tales.

Historia
Centuries ago, Spanish conquistadors searching for gold and new lands encountered a group of independent city-states in Mesoamerica. Sophisticated beyond the Spaniards' wildest imaginings, these people were the Aztecs, the Maya, and related cultures that shared common traditions of religion, government, the arts, engineering, and trade. In many ways more advanced than European nations, these societies equaled the world's greatest civilizations of their time.

Dr. Barnhart Brings a Lifetime of Knowledge
Revisado: 01-06-22
Get ready for a fascinating journey through this complex world. I've now listened multiple times and have gleaned new info, and made different connections each time. Dr. Barnhart's decades of hands-on experience at many of the sites discussed adds immeasurably to this course.
These advanced cultures have, for too long, been completely ignored in the story of "history" in US schools - or darn close to it. This courses helps to offset that lack.
If you're at all curious about these advanced, complex, and so-different-from-us cultures, you'll enjoy this course.

Ben Mezrich's 2009 best seller, The Accidental Billionaires, is the definitive account of Facebook's founding and the basis for the Academy Award-winning film The Social Network. Two of the story's iconic characters are Harvard students Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss: identical twins, Olympic rowers, and foils to Mark Zuckerberg. Bitcoin Billionaires is the story of the brothers’ redemption and revenge in the wake of their epic legal battle with Facebook.

Bloated, Overly-Dramatized, but Informative
Revisado: 04-25-21
Full of scenic details, clothing descriptions, and individuals’ thoughts that the author couldn’t possibly know, this could and should be 20% shorter. Clearly, the author is hoping to sell another movie script, similar to his “The Social Network”.
The fluff interferes with the fascinating history of the Winklevoss twins and their entry into the cryptocurrency world. The book does offer helpful simplifications of many of the technical complexities, and I’m happy for a much-improved grasp of this world.
The narrator does a fine job with the technical pronunciations and the occasional character accent.

Interesting info, but should be 25% shorter with less music beds (which are constant) & filler and less moralizing. Obviously stretched at times to meet podcast episode target lengths. Worth downloading (for free), but play this one at accelerated speed.

Great Ideas & Info (Despite Sales Pitch)
Revisado: 01-23-20
Intelligently written and structured, "10 Steps" builds on the foundation of "Getting Things Done" and others, adding new ideas and useful updates about using the Web and other technology. Frequent references to the author's software program ("Nozbe") get tiresome for non-users, but useful info and on-line bonuses help balance that out. Narrator is clear and captures the author's enthusiasm. Nice short length helps my intention to re-listen to absorb and implement the ideas more effectively.

Predominately first-person rather than third-person, this is more about the author’s adulation then it is an objective and thorough portrait of the subject. Fun back-stories and tidbits about a variety of rock stars, but tiresome listening nonetheless.
