Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 03-07-25
I'd like to start out by saying I feel like I was extremely misled by this book's title and synopsis- I thought I was getting a humorous low-stakes sort of LitRPG- and in the beginning that's exactly what you get.
I absolutely loved the first 1/3 of this book- I thought I found a new favorite series. It was cozy sort of fantasy with a cast of really fun and lovable characters. Jake himself was particularly lovable and funny- I laughed out loud countless times. I was really enjoying seeing him adjust to the new world, magic and challenges that were brought about by Earth's addition to the system.
However this very ABRUPTLY changes and quickly descends in to action and chaos. Most of this book is spent AWAY from the magical market and all of the lovable characters from the beginning. Jake turns into an OVERPOWERED, overly lucky hero with an abundance of "convenient" situations, finds, powers, cards ect. By the end of the book it feels like you're reading a completely different story almost in a how the heck did we even get here kind of way. It's seting up for a bunch of time travel (which is a thing I personally hate) and convoluted plot lines that I'm just seriously uninterested in.
That being said- I think the writing was great (there was a bit of weird sentence/information repetition at times) the character development was good and the world and card system was interesting, but in the end this was just not for me. I won't be continuing the series but if you enjoy interesting action filled litrpg it's worth a shot.
The audio narrator, Travis Baldree, knocks this one out of the park- as usual. His performance is what kept me listening even when the story sort of goes off the rails.

Historia
An army of monsters walks among us, hidden in plain sight. They're fast. They're strong. They're unrelenting. And they only want one thing: The shitty gas station at the edge of town. Coming as a surprise to absolutely no one, Jack - night-shift clerk and local crazy person - has found himself neck-deep in the middle of yet another world-ending terror. And this time around, nobody can be trusted. Not that tough-as-nails cop who probably knows a lot more than she's letting on. Not the adorkable new employee who might be something far less innocent than she appears.

This volume kept losing my attention, the narration and humor was top tier as always. I think maybe it was too much time passing between volumes 2 and 3 and maybe I forgot too much and that was the problem?

I just finished my second read of this book in preparation for reading the second book, and I'm so glad I did. This read, I listened to the audiobook which was really fun. I think the narrator did a fantastic job, and I picked up so much that I missed my first read through.
In the Hills is a fast paced and exciting read. So much happens in this one book that the reader never has a moment to get bored or feel like the plot is dragging. (my favorite kind of read) It hooks you with the first sentence and never lets go.
This one does have a pretty large cast of characters, which is something that I personally tend to have trouble with. However, that is not a problem I had with this book. The characters are introduced a few at a time and are fully developed and unique it was easy to keep track of who's who.
As mentioned before, this book is so much in one- it's a sort of murder mystery, small town, true crime, creature feature, religious horror story blended together into a enthrallingly bingeable story. It will have you on a rollercoaster of emotions so buckle up you're in for a ride.
There was so much set up and foreshadowing in this book and I cannot wait to dive into book two.

Too much cops, not enough shark.
Revisado: 07-15-24
I really really wanted to just read a high speed killer shark book, unfortunately this one was really focused on the cop characters, and that’s just not what I was looking for.
The narrator is fantastic.
This was very much a it’s not you, it’s me. So if this one interests you- give it a go.

Pete is a simple man who enjoys a good drink amongst good friends. Not too much to ask, right? Now, he's trapped in a fantasy world far from home, stuck underground and inside the body of a smelly dwarf with fantastic facial hair. The worst part? The swill that the dwarves are falling all over themselves to drink. It's flat, it's watery, and it has the alcohol content of a rancid coconut. Can Pete save the dwarves from their own sour fate, or will he be forever doomed to plink his pickaxe away in hopes that he hits the motherlode?

Revisado: 05-30-24
A cozy, low-stakes LitRPG. Plenty of beards and even more beer!
I listened to the audio of this one and the narrator was FANTASTIC! The characters, setting and pacing were all great, however, I just couldn't connect to the story. The world is interesting and all the behind the scenes brewing stuff was fun- If this book sounds interesting to you definitely give it a try- just because it wasn't my jam doesn't mean it won't be yours!

Not all that long ago, Gabe Skelter was an unimpressive, overweight, snarky teenager with more mouth than muscle and more attitude than attributes. Then, during a deadly trainwreck, he was transported to another reality. On the world of Regaia, Gabe is a different person entirely: a massively jacked-up warrior orc known as Loon. The dud has become a stud.

One of my favorite series
Revisado: 01-23-24
I adore this series so much, it has quickly earned a spot on my favorites shelf. While I didn't love this book as much as the first, I had an absolute blast reading (listening to) it. It's absolutely mind blowing that this entire story takes place in the course of what- a day? SO MUCH HAPPENS. In this volume you get a plethora of fun and crazy new characters introduced, so much more character development for Loon- so many feeeeelings! There's banter, more fighting, more shenanigans! Things are starting to come together and I am cannot wait to see what happenes next.
As mentioned in my review for book one, I listened to the audio of these and the narrator is just perfection. Probably my favorite narrator of all time.

Gabe Skelter has a temper, which he likes to imagine has the effect of causing people to fear and respect him. On the contrary, his pudgy, underdeveloped body and negative personality make him more your standard outcast teenager. Worse still, he kinda knows what a jerkweed he actually is. Then, in the middle of a class trip, Gabe finds himself spirited away to Regaia: a world of magic, mayhem, and nerd-tastic adventure. Naturally, he’s completely ill-prepared. But in this realm, he’s a monstrous, muscular man of action.

My favorite LitRPG
Revisado: 01-04-24
HELP ME I'M FEELING!
This book blew me away. I have read quite a lot of LitRPG's and none of them begin to compare to this one, none of them. Based on the cover art and synopsis I expected just another silly RPG based story that is slam full of jokes and action and doesn't really delve too deep into character development or take itself seriously. Boy oh boy was I wrong. Don't mis understand this book is absolutely HILARIOUS. There were times when I was laughing so hard I almost cried... Butteeeerscotch!? There are a ton of pop culture references and lots of quips it was a great time.
However that's not all you get with this one. I am so impressed by the well rounded characters, the plot and development of both. A lot of people find the MC Loon/lune? (I listened to the audio) annoying and insufferable. I found him to be neither- Okay he is unlikeable at introduction- but even he acknowledges that fact. I found him to be quite amusing and lovable.
The vast majority of this book is fun, action packed hilarity, so I was caught utterly unprepared for the turn this book took stabbing me right in the feels, and then sprinkling salt in the feely wound! Don't worry it bounces back and balances the very serious with the comedy in a way that is perfection. I'm just absolutely blown away by the writing in this book and I immediately bought book two.
As mentioned earlier, I listened to the audio of this one and I feel like it is the absolute BEST way to enjoy this one. seriously, if you can get the dang audiobook!!!
The narrator, Johnathan McClain, made this story come to life in a way I've never experienced in an audio book before. You can just tell that they loved narrating this book and put their whole heart into the performance. The way they deliver the emotions and tones of the characters is magic. I had an absolute blast listening and the blooper real at the end was such a fun surprise.
A MILLION STARS TO THIS BOOK!!!!!!
