Historia
Postmodernism claims that "modernity", which grew from the Enlightenment to the Industrial Revolution and Marxism, has collapsed. We now live in an endlessly "contemporary" culture, a virtual world of "hyperreality" containing such strange phenomena as post-Holocaust amnesia, Disneyland, cyberspace, and Fukuyama's proclaimed "end of history".

Half the story
Revisado: 06-11-08
Very entertaining, but only covers the arts and cultural side of postmoderism. I had hoped for more of the philosophy and its effects on society, technology, economics, and politics.

Historia
The Story of Philosophy is a timeless overview of Western thought. Will Durant's goal was to humanize knowledge by centering the story around certain dominant personalities. He brilliantly illustrates how philosophy has evolved over time, explaining the historical, cultural, and political context of each movement and each great thinker. The best-selling philosophy book of the past century, this masterpiece of eloquent, clear prose continues to fascinate.

Where is Hobbs, Locke and Hume?
Revisado: 06-11-08
Maybe philosophers in general have decided they are not part of science, or is it scientists don't do philosophy, but the empiricists are missing here from the Enlightenment through mid 20th century when the narative ends. However, the rationalists are well covered. Including some we tend to forget like Nietzsche and Santayana. For those the book is worth listening to.

Disappointed by what is missing
Revisado: 06-11-08
This is a very popular and well known overview of philosophy, so I was anticipating more. As the title notes, Plato and Voltaire are fairly well covered. However, nothing is said about the skeptics, cynics, epicurians, and stoics which makes me feel like I entered the plot half way, and missed the back story. Too much selection by key persons, and not enough by key ideas.

Historia
Confucius knew all about life and told us how to behave, but we can't find out precisely what he was up to. His well-meaning platitudes, quaint maxims, and quasi-enigmatic anecdotes combined to produce an ideal philosophy for civil servants. It would appear that his aim was to turn his pupils into good government officials, but his teachings succeeded beyond his wildest expectations, providing rules of conduct and spiritual fodder for more than two thousand years.

Could have been better
Revisado: 04-04-08
The western point of view and bias get in the way of the information and ideas. It is difficult to understand Confucian thinking when the author of this book is so sure that it is wrong. If you are buying a book to learn something, try one of the others.
