Historia
Portugal has a rich history that dates to prehistoric times. The first settlers left amazing art behind in the form of rock carvings and rock monoliths. Even though Portugal is probably best known for exploring the world during the Age of Discovery, the history of mainland Portugal is rarely described outside of the country. The purpose of this audiobook is to familiarize English speakers with the events and personas that built the Portuguese kingdom, its overseas empire, and the state that Portugal is today.

Solid overview
Revisado: 11-13-22
Another reviewer commented that this is nothing more than a genealogical survey of the monarchies. I disagree. Monarchies play a big role in the history of most European countries, of course they are discussed heavily in this book. But the book is by no means focused only on monarchs and their families. It covers the significant events in Portugal's history equally well.
I had two reasons for reading this book. First, I am going to take a vacation to Portugal in 2023 (I live in the US), so I wanted an introduction to their history. Second, I am an avid reader of history books.
Most of the history books I read are giant tomes. The small size of this book makes it almost a pamphlet compared to many history books. In its 6-hour run time, however, it covers a lot of ground. It starts slowly with ancient history, but picks up steam as larger civilizations stake their claims on the Iberian Peninsula. I found the trading back and forth between the Christian and Muslim empires to be fascinating - sometimes wars were fought, and sometimes cities and regions were lost due to neglect and atrophy. Later, when Portugal was run by monarchs (both native and Spanish monarchs), there was plenty of drama to keep anyone interested in history entertained. Not to mention natural disasters, the Inquisition, and the plague. Big events, interesting stuff.
I would say the only shortcoming of this book is that it barely touched modern times. In essence, after Antonio Salazar's death (1970, he was an intellectual dictator, not a tyrant), the book says "and then there was democracy, NATO, and the UN, the end". That part felt very rushed.
If you prefer an in-depth book on Portugal, this isn't it. I don't think there is such a book on Audible. But for a quick overview, I strongly recommend it. I plan to listen to it a second time before I head to Portugal.

DO NOT PURCHASE - audible version is buggy
Revisado: 11-12-19
I suspect this is a good book as it was recommended to me by a friend and I was looking forward to listening to it. This audible version is inconsistent with sentence structure and thought. It jumps around quite a bit.

Historia
In this masterly work of synthesis, Peter Mansfield, drawing on his experience as a journalist and a historian, explores two centuries of history in the Middle East. He forms a picture of the historical, political, and social history of the meeting point of Occident and Orient, from Bonaparte's marauding invasion of Egypt to the start of the Gulf War. For more than four thousand years, the Middle East has provided a setting for titanic struggles between great civilizations and religions.

Good stuff, what's with all the bad reviews?
Revisado: 07-15-04
(I am not finished with the book, I'm still in the 1980's)
The sound quality isn't high but I had no trouble understanding it. I had zero problems with the narrator's accent, he speaks well and clearly. The important part - the information - is great stuff. I know a lot more about the M.E. now than I did before, and that was my goal. It doesn't seem excessively biased to me at all. The western world, and later the Israelis, have been a domineering, bullying force in the M.E. for centuries. No surprise there, right? Mansfield doesn't paint western powers as the bad guys, just as the guys with the big stick. How is that inaccurate?
