Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Historia
Thirty-year-old Barbara Weaver was content to live as the Amish have for centuries - without modern convenience - but her husband, Eli, wanted a life beyond horses and buggies. Soon he gave in to the temptation of technology and found ways to go Online and meet women. When Barbara was found dead, shot in the chest at close range, all eyes were on Eli... and his mistress, a conservative Mennonite named Barb Raber. Barb drove Eli to appointments in her car. She gave him everything he asked for: a laptop, rides to his favorite fishing and hunting spots, and sex.

learned quite a bit about the Amish
Revisado: 11-30-23
as the reader read transcripts of conversations it was hard sometimes to discern who was saying what as they didn't moderate their voice at times. Interesting case that left me wondering why the mastermind of the murder got off so lightly. There was no physical proof that pointed to Barbara except the text messages which indicated Eli was the driving force behind the murder. I mean Charlie Manson didn't commit the Tate La-Bianca murders, yet he was the mastermind behind them and was charged and sentenced as such. Eli got off easy.

Revisado: 09-27-23
I enjoyed This story about Belle da Costa Greene. Her struggles and triumphs were extraordinary, especially when you consider the time she lived. I'm glad I purchased and listened to her story. She walked a fine line between two worlds and managed to navigate it very successfully.
I didn't particularly like the reader who pronounced several words oddly , Renaissance was especially odd. I wish Belle's letters would have survived. Then we would get a better idea about her thoughts in her own words. I realize this is a historical fiction, but the conversations between Belle and her family or lover was a bridge to far for me. Conversations made up out of the writers assumptions and imaginingation. I would have enjoyed them sticking to the facts and not so much of the made up fictionalized conversations. They portrayed Belle as naive in the extreme when it comes to her lover. Perhaps I should stick to biographies. I've taken note of the recommendations in the afterword by the authors.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

surprised
Revisado: 09-01-23
The story was not anything I'd expected. It started off good, but the middle was hard to get through. I'm glad I did though. The author brings it all together in the end. He had lost me with the magic conduction but I kept listening. He tells eloquently the stories of the characters. I could see them and envision them going about their everyday "tasks". I saw them on that wagon picking up the laundry, washing it. How thier back must have been so tired . Their hands chapped red and raw from the lye.
Some parts of the story were problematic, like the convention in the woods. Mostly though it gives the feel of what it might have been to be Hi, or Sophie living that life. In the end I think it was poetic justice and perfect that Hiram Walker continues his work for the Underground where and how he does. It's a small victory in a way.
This country has a long way to go in coming to terms with our past . African American studies have been cut from many school programs in the last two years. Or teaching that slavery was "good" because usable skills were learned by the enslaved is ridiculous. To say that is a sad thing is an understatement.

Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Fascinating history. She was ahead of her time and extremely smart. Loved this story and wish Heddy Lamarr had received credit at the time. Sad the military didnt use her design and save lives. Seems she was constantly reminded of where a women belongs in our patriachal society. Women still face those same attitudes today unfortunately. My only criticism would be the reader. She comes across as arrogant and snooty oftentimes. The reader did a good job with the accent though. I recently watched a documentary about her and she doesn't sound that way in the interviews .

Historia
While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies....

three extraordinary young women
Revisado: 01-21-23
A touching account of three ordinary young women who did extraordinary things during world War 2 . With no training and little guidance by anyone in authority these young women fought for their country in the only way they thought they could. The narrator did a wonderful reading . His measured reading of the material was very good. The history of these three was fascinating and leaves a lasting impression. I am glad they were finally honored and have been recognized by their government as well as by the righteous amoung the nation's Yad Vashem for their heroic actions during the war.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Excellent story
Revisado: 10-31-22
I absolutely loved this story. It’s fabulous fun fantasy with some fun facts thrown in. An octopus is an intelligent creature and this story highlights all those possibilities in a fun, interesting, and creative story.
Marcellus’s sarcasm, humor and intelligence were perfect. This story took me away from everyday life to another dimension. One of fantasy and wonder. The descriptions played through my mind like a movie. The voice of Marcellus was the best reader I’ve encountered on audible. He was perfect. His inflections and expressions reading were how i would have read it.
Often the reader says it differently than i would have.
The set up was a little slow in the first chapter but once the hook was cast the story took off on the best adventure I’ve had in a long time. A pure delight, I can’t say enough how much I’ve enjoyed this book. I didn't want the adventure to end.
The only other criticism I have is the voice of Terry. Terry is from a Caribbean island but has no accent. The narrator does a pretty fair rendition of a Scott’s accent but does not try a Jamaican accent. They should have gotten another person to read the part of Terry the aquariums director.
