Historia
The endgame has begun. Who will win? Those who seek to rid the planet of the alien infestation have produced a counter agent that could turn the tide, while others who have accepted the new paradigm hope to live in peace. Two competing sides now begin their final dance, and Cassie is drawn right in the middle of this conflict. The ultimate fate of humanity hangs in the balance, and her actions will be the deciding factor.

The story is everything
Revisado: 04-14-25
The synth “virtual voice” component of the story nearly caused me to completely ditch the Audible version and just stick with the Kindle version. But I kept slogging away, hoping against hope that it would maybe get better. It didn’t, unfortunately. In this case, it proves the adage true that for most things involving tech, you usually get what you pay for. I don’t think I’ll try another synth voice audiobook again, at least for a while.

Historia
When the body of a suicide victim disappears at West Point Military Academy in 1831, only to be discovered hours later missing its heart, the Academy calls on retired detective Gus Landor to investigate. Landor is something of a legend among his peers, noted for an uncanny, Holmesian ability to read people. When Edgar Allan Poe, a new cadet, comes forth with his own cryptic conclusion—that the man Landor is looking for is a poet—Landor is intrigued and enlists Poe as his assistant.

Excellent storytelling by Charles Leggett, the perfect voice for a thrilling tale
Revisado: 03-13-25
The BBC Audiobook “The Pale Blue Eye” is one of the best I’ve ever listened to. The narrator, Charles Leggett, lends his considerable voice acting skills to this riveting tale by Louis Bayard. Bravo to BBC Audiobooks for bringing this production to us.

Historia
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

An outstanding production
Revisado: 05-03-24
It was very much like watching a 3+ hr movie, all inside your head. Andrew Garfield is perfectly matched to Winston Smith’s somewhat bewildered character, and Andrew Scott exhibits bone-chilling perfection as O’Brien. Prepare yourself for an unnerving experience.

Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

I’ve never been a fan of stories that place high premium on palace intrigue and scheming nobles.

Take notes, it’ll pay off
Revisado: 11-11-19
I had the hardcover opened and followed along with the Audible book - having both made for a much richer reading experience. It also helped with keeping track of a very full cast of characters and where they fit in the timeline, as the story builds to its history-making conclusion.

Historia
They first appear as a series of dots on astronomical plates, heading from Saturn directly toward Earth. Since the ringed planet carries no life, scientists deduce the mysterious ship to be a visitor from another star. The world's frantic efforts to signal the aliens go unanswered. The first contact is hostile: the invaders blast a Soviet space station, seize the survivors, and then destroy every dam and installation on Earth with a hail of asteriods.

Perhaps the greatest alien invasion story ever
Revisado: 05-12-18
Footfall is an amazing story, weaving a complex cast with very strong character development throughout what repeatedly seems to be an impossible and unwinnable conflict, for all sides. Highly recommended!
