Historia
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain. When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed.

Absolutely Brilliant!
Revisado: 11-29-22
This book has an amazing story of fighting against monsters of the everyday oppression kind as well as in the literal sense. Zetian shows us that in order to make change one may need both deadly strength and healing compassion. Rong Fu's voice brings the story to life in ways I couldn't have imagined!
There's so much cool anime-style action interspersed throughout. Our heroine is a badass, but also vulnerable both emotionally and physically. Her fight to gain the power that her society denies her is breathtaking. Being AFAB myself, I find myself cheering for even her most sinister moments. It's cathartic as heck!
The messaging can be a bit heavy-handed or on-the-nose sometimes, but the whole thing is such a wild ride that it's easy to get caught up in the action, romance, and suspense. I also love learning bits of Chinese folklore and history throughout.
All in all, I can't wait for Heavenly Tyrant. I'm so glad I learned about Xiran Jay Zhao through their amazing YouTube videos. Now I've discovered they're a great novelist as well!
*Spoiler ahead*
The story also features the best love triangle I've ever heard of, especially because it's an actual triangle and not just a corner that the AFAB protagonist is trapped in. The romantic scenes manage to get hot and steamy without ever having to go all the way to explicit descriptions of sex. I could swear my car windows fogged up!

Historia
Fifteen months ago, Gwyn discovered he’s the rightful king of Simaerin, last of the ancient line of Wintervale. Now he leads an army against the tyrannical Crow King. But first, Gwyn and his ragged army of tradesmen, peasants, and escaped slaves must brave the cruel winter months without proper supplies or shelter while trying to rescue the residents of a port city sentenced to death and avoid the menacing mercenary forces of Hesh-Kasal. Confronted with true loyalty and bitter betrayal in turns, Gwyn wrestles with his own doubts to find the line between trust and wisdom.

Better Than The First
Revisado: 01-08-22
As much as I enjoyed Crow King, this sequel manages to be an improvement. Better pacing in the writing, great performance by Logan Stearns, and an emotional rollercoaster of a story. It was the kind of experience that makes me wish the series could be longer. I'll miss Gwyn and Nethaera and all their comrades! Both books worth a read/listen, for sure.

Historia
I haven’t gotten this far only to meet my maker in the dirty corridor of a wrecked spaceship. I survived an intergalactic civil war. I lost my family. I reinvented my entire life as a salvager on the fringes of the universe. I looked at dead bodies that were strewn around me. I stared down the barrel of the gun that was pointed at my chest. Betrayal was always ugly, but it looked especially awful this time. I had a terrible taste in my mouth.

Love This Performance
Revisado: 12-13-21
The vocal performance in this audiobook version really elevates the story. I feel like I got a better sense of the characters' personalities based on how they sounded. There's some really fun action here, too. Doesn't hurt that you can get all four books in one! Great read if you're looking for fast-paced pulpy sci-fi adventures.

The Crow King has outlawed magic. Despite the kingdom's edict, Gwyn plunges into the ancient and deadly True Wood to find a magical cure for his dying brother. Within the shadowed realm, he must fend off more than violent and fallen fae - like Ilidreth - when he learns the king is out to stop him at whatever cost. On his desperate quest, he is joined by a unicorn, a quirky girl, and the maddest of the fallen fae. Together they must outrun enchanted crows and enemy armies, and face the ghosts of a shattered age, all while racing to save Gwyn’s brother.

Great Performance! Slightly Rushed Pacing.
Revisado: 06-04-21
Overall, a great story, wonderfully performed! This audiobook version brought such life and personality to the characters. I wish it could've been spread out over more books, though. The big time jump was pretty jarring. I would've loved to have experienced more of Gwynn training and working toward rebellion, or Kive and Nathaera's adventures in Freylin. It felt like I missed a lot. This is such an interesting and magical world that I want to know more about it. I can't wait to hear the next book!
