Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Poirot accent tough to handle.
Revisado: 03-18-15
Of course Christie's story was excellent. I have been spoiled by Hugh Frazier performances, apparently, because the Poirot accent for this was pretty awful. Other voices were fine.

Narrator voice is a HUGE distraction.
Revisado: 10-23-13
What did you like best about Princess Elizabeth's Spy? What did you like least?
This should be a pleasant light read, but the narration is so distracting that I almost had to stop listening.
What other book might you compare Princess Elizabeth's Spy to and why?
Pretty similar to the Rhys Bowen series.
What didn’t you like about Susan Duerden’s performance?
There are problems with the narration. The weird breathiness was the first thing that I noticed. It sounded like she was narrating a dream sequence. It wasn't long before I noticed the very strange cadence that marked every sentence of the third person narration. It was kind of like she was a BBC newsreader. Very strange and distracting to the point that I almost stopped listening. But I paid for the download and I felt compelled to finish. The other very annoying thing was her interpretation of Maggie's voice. There is a tendency for some British actors to make their Americans sound like idiots, but this one was over the top. It sounded much like the voice of the "Barbie" doll in the Toy Story animated movies. Maggie is a mathematics genius, not a bimbo. It made me laugh when she would say something technical, because it was so ridiculous to hear that voice citing math theory. I thought maybe I was being hard on Ms. Duerden, thinking she was directed to have her voice have the weird monotone, breathy cadence,so I went and listened to a sample of some of her other books. Unfortunately, they were the same. So, if I want to read the rest of the series, I will probably get the books from the library.
Did Princess Elizabeth's Spy inspire you to do anything?
Avoid Susan Duerden narrations.

Historia
It is 1803, six years since Elizabeth and Darcy embarked on their life together at Pemberley, Darcy’s magnificent estate. Their peaceful, orderly world seems almost unassailable. Elizabeth has found her footing as the chatelaine of the great house. They have two fine sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles. Elizabeth’s sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy’s sister Georgiana. And preparations are under way for their much-anticipated annual autumn ball.

A nice tribute
Revisado: 12-30-11
What did you like best about Death Comes to Pemberley? What did you like least?
I liked the opportunity to visit with all of my favorite characters from Pride and Prejudice with the quality of writing that makes the characters and their interactions with one another believable. The thing that bothered me the most was the time spent, particularly in the epilogue, going over that with which I think the vast majority of readers are very familiar.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would much rather have read what P.D. James thinks would continue to happen in the lives of the Bennet family. Is Mary happy in her marriage? Does anything ever happen in Kitty's life? The epilogue mainly covered what we already knew. I think the assumption needed to be made that the reader was very familiar with the original Bennet story. The other thing I would have done is have a man do the narration. This was not a woman's story. There was much more from Mr. Darcy's viewpoint. The narration on many audible books is done by someone very skilled at performing many different voices, male and female, demonstrating an amazing ability to create voices that can be distinguished from each other. I would not say this was true for this book. The men all sounded like some slightly pompous, upper crust nineteenth century generic man. I was always conscious that it was a woman attempting to sound like a man.
What three words best describe Rosalyn Landor’s performance?
Pleasant, unvaried, inoffensive
