Historia
This is the story of the most successful cocaine dealers in the world: Pablo Escobar Gaviria, Jorge Luis Ochoa Vasquez, Carlos Lehder Rivas, and Jose Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha. In the 1980s, they controlled more than 50 percent of the cocaine flowing into the United States. The cocaine trade is capitalism on overdrive - supply meeting demand on exponential levels. Here you'll find the story of how the modern cocaine business started and how it turned a ragtag group of hippies and sociopaths into regal kings.

Can't get the breed of horse right...
Revisado: 12-14-24
I was so incredibly annoyed that the breed of horse referenced in this book was incorrect. They are Paso Finos. Which translates to "fine step" not "the walking horse." If the authors can't get this right, what else did they get wrong? What else did the editors and fact checkers miss? While this is one of the most insanely depth accounts of the Medellin Cartel I've read, I don't trust the research nor the journalistic integrity of the authors.

Historia
You may "know" Jenny Slate from her Netflix special, Stage Fright, as the creator of Marcel the Shell, or as the star of Obvious Child. But you don't really know Jenny Slate until you get bonked on the head by her absolutely singular writing style. To see the world through Jenny's eyes is to see it as though for the first time, shimmering with strangeness and possibility.

This was not a good audiobook. Jenny is too all over the place and maniac. Could've benefitted from some editing.

Nothing New...Heavy-handed politically
Revisado: 12-03-24
There are only a few new titles mentioned in this book, all of which I've read as most of them have been up for major literary awards. The rest are predictable titles that are staples on these lists. Where I take great exception to this book is the heavy-handedness of the political rhetoric. We get it, she doesn't like DJT. But the hypocrisy is also off-putting. Please don't hold up Junot Diaz with the same breath you strike down Trump. It's not a good look. I was really looking forward to this book as I love books about books. But this was a rehash of all ready trodden soil, with a heaping help of liberal political twaddle. I will give credit to the always fantastic Tavia Gilbert. Her narration was top shelf as expected.

What an important story to share!
Revisado: 06-18-24
I can only imagine how difficult this story was to share, but I'm glad that she did. Maggie Nichols is a phenomenal athlete and even better person. I knew there would be some uncomfortable parts of her story, and there were. But I think she told them as sensitively as she could. I have so much respect for her. There were so many times in her life when she could've given up. There were also many times when she could've remained quiet and toed the line. The world of gymnastics is a better and safer place for athletes, because of Maggie's courage (and all of her peers). Thank you for sharing, dear Maggie.

Great information - Not so great narration
Revisado: 01-24-24
This book is a really great source for wine lovers, especially if you are new to wine. The author has a fun "voice" and doesn't take himself too seriously (which can be a problem with some wine books). I loved the personal anecdotes and stories. However, the narrator was not good. I don't think it would've been too much to ask for the narrator to have been familiar with basic wine terminology, types of grapes and growing regions. That was not the case with this narrator. If a word could be mispronounced, it was. Who pronounces cabernet with a hard "T" or pronounces the "ss" in chabliss? I about choked with "boojalace." And this is as much on the producers and editors as it is the narrator. I would recommend this book, but not the audio version. If Hilario could've just pronounced words correctly, this would've been a homerun listen. My only quibble is with his pronunciation. Everything else with his narration was fine.

Historia
It all started when I hosted a little party for a bunch of new friends. Though “friends” might not be the right word since the invitees were all the women I’d found out my boyfriend was talking to behind my back. When the guest of honor walked in—aka my now ex—things took a turn… Unfortunately, a stranger witnessed the whole blowout. I was in a mood that night and ended up giving this gorgeous guy an attitude, too. As if my night could get any worse, before he stormed off, he informed me he was actually my landlord.

I've enjoyed Vi and Penelope's work for years now. They always have fun and interesting characters, and crazy plot twists. I love this opposites attract, single dad story. I was expecting laughs (and there were). I was not expecting tears. The last few lines had me shedding some tears. This might be my favorite of their novels. Well done, ladies. Zachary and Maxine were top shelf narrators.

Pretty Basic...kind of boring
Revisado: 06-23-23
At only 12 minutes long, my expectations weren't very high and they were still not met. Most of this information can be found on a wikipedia entry. Also incredibly annoyed that Carrie Underwood's hometown is mispronounced. It's really not that difficult to check pronunciations for something that is 12 minutes long.

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

Story was Meh; Audio was Terrible
Revisado: 03-29-23
Not the worst P&P retelling, but far from the best. It was just meh. Can't say that I am the biggest fan of Lydia's redemption arch, but it might be for someone else. The audio, however, was atrocious. The music is so loud in some parts that the narration cannot be heard. The two main voice actors were ok, but the rest of the cast were too quiet to be heard in most parts. So glad I didn't actually pay money for this one, and I only lost a couple of hours of my life.

I've got everything it takes to make it in Tinseltown: confidence, charisma, and a killer chin. Now all I need is a chance. But Los Angeles is full of hot young hunks, and talent might not be enough to separate me from the cookie-cutter crowd. So I devise a wild scheme to get noticed. Pretend I’m someone I'm not—good-bye Will O’Connell of Cincinnati and hello Liam O’Connell of Dublin. "Liam" and his talent with accents is enough to get my foot in the door, but I never anticipated meeting the woman who has me more worried about keeping my foot out of my mouth.

Not good
Revisado: 12-06-22
This really should be called a "A Catalog of Crappy Music with Some Teenage Angst Thrown In for Plot Reasons." The only reason I'm not giving it a 1 star review is that the mystery "suicide note" book was intriguing, but not intriguing enough to inspire me to read the next book. The constant references to music were extra annoying, especially since I don't particularly like or listen to any of it, so any correlation to the plot (if it existed at all) was missed on me. This novel seemed a little self-indulgent. Don't think I was its target audience.
