The sometimes brutal (public shaming on social media), sometimes nuanced (concern” expressed by “friends”), external forces and catastrophic internal influences (ruminating, second-guessing) that shape women’s thoughts and behaviors are picked here like Rika’s scab. An extraordinary literary accomplishment!

A Rambling Pastiche of Others’ Ideas

Even the chapter titles belong to others. Take a lot of King, a little Flanagan, even some Straub, stitch them together in a thin, crazy quilt, and you’ll have this mess of a book. The male reader’s voice is perky and ill suited for such darkness; two stars for the female, whose laid back drawl fit Maddie’s character perfectly.
